Boggarts

Which one is your favorite so far. Are they getting even better as the characters develop over time?

I don't know about that. When do the Boggarts change into your greatest fear? I think only when they can see you. Now Moody could see the Boggart in the closet with his magical eye, but the Boggart (as for as I know, correct me if I'm wrong here!) couldn't see him. So I do believe Moody saw the Boggart in it's 'real' form..
Or might they keep the last appearance they took? For example, I open a closet, there's a Boggart in there, it changes into my greatest fear, I close the closet again, does it keep the form it took?

I was just thinking about boggarts (what my boggart would be, in fact) and found this thread. I wonder what a boggart would turn into

If your greatest fear is darkness?

If your greatest fear is loneliness?

If your greatest fear is a volcano outburst or

World War III? :o

Btw, do they turn into what is your biggest fear or into what you think is your biggest fear?

As far as I understand boggarts, they turn into a picture of your fear. They don't inherit the objects actual powers. In Harry's case, they look like a dementor, but don't have their abilities. And think of Lupin: They turn into a small picture of the moon, not the moon itself.

So if you fear loneliness or a volcano, they will show you a picture of it. YOU have a picture, if you think about the matter.

2. If a person is afraid of heights what does the boggart become??
3. If a person has claustrophobia (sp??) what does the boggart turn into??

well as for me I'm at a complete loss for 2 and 3 those are my questions....

but for number 1, it was posed on another forum and I'm of the opinion that the person is afraid of a boggart because they are afraid of what it'll become which means that they aren't really afraid of the boggart, they are afraid of the scary thing they originally thought it would become so it'll still take that form

see....its confused me already, just end up going round in circles....anyway, anyone else got any thoughts on the matter

i love this topic, its so brilliant because its so impossible to explain without getting lost

and last question (if you feel like giving an answer)

4. What would your boggart become?

well I'm as bad as Ron, mines got to be a giant spider

1. erm... agree w/ your 2nd post...
2. the monkey bars... or a giant slide ride
3. encloses you in a small room...
4. basicly(sp?) what mrs. weasly's was... only my family.
or my computer being smashed... lol

1. If a person's greatest fear is a boggart what will they see when they meet a boggart??

Possibly they would see a boggart in its true form? Or perhaps they fear a boggart becuase of what they already know it will become. In which case the boggart is not really thier greatest fear.

2. If a person is afraid of heights what does the boggart become??

Because this is an intangible fear, perhaps it will be up to the individual boggart to decide what to morph into. Hermione was afraid of failure, but beccause failure is an intangible thing, a boggart can't turn into failure. So the boggart had to turn into something that could convey the sense of failure, whilst maintaining the form of something different. I would assume that because the boggart had been living at the school, it would be familiar with many of the teachers and students. Because of this it knew that McGonagal was a powerful woman with enough authority that she could dish out failure. Quite a clever boggart.

In the case of hieghts, perhaps it would become a deep hole? Perhaps it could become a bird and carry the poor person out a window

3. If a person has claustrophobia (sp??) what does the boggart turn into??

Probably a closet that would snap its doors and attempt to swallow the person.

As for Moody seeing a boggart, maybe he is the first person to see it in its true form?

Maybe the boggart can sense if a person is seeing it, regardless of whether the boggart can actually see the person.

Oh, I forgot to mention something.

Does anyone think that the boggart gets the "powers" of whatever it turns into? For instance, could Harry's Dementor/boggart suck out people's souls?

If Ron were bitten by his spider/boggart, would his body be affected by venom?

If Lupin didn't vanquish the moon/boggart, would it eventually turn him into a werewolf? (I imagine that this would take quite a while seeing as the boggart is a much smaller moon)

If a boggart turned into Voldermort, would it be a serious threat to the world? Would the boggart be able to Adara Kedavra people?

I don't think Boggarts take the powers of what they turn into. My reason is the if you look at the 3rd Task in GoF when Harry casts his patronus on a boggart, thinking it's a dementor, it trips over or something. Because of that he realised it wasn't really a dementor. That means it doesn't act like what it turns into, so I doubt it would have it's powers.
If boggarts were like that, I suppose Voldemort could recruit the boggarts to his side, which would make him so much stronger. And if the boggarts all turned into Voldemort. Brrrrrrrr :(

What a terrible idea, just imagine! :o

I read the chapter 'Patronus' in PoA again, and the boggart has the same effect on Harry as the real dementor. As soon as it gets out of the closet, Harry hears his parents dying.
That doesn't necessarily mean a boggart has the powers of whatever it turns into, though. Maybe, it becomes exactly the way your greatest fear is in your mind, everything that's part of your memory or your imagination. Harry's memory of a dementor was connected with hearing his parents voices, so the boggart could imitate it.
That's just my two cents, but it's the only way it makes sense to me. :???:

ok, this may be a stupid question, but what does "my two cents" mean?!?!?!? it drives me up the wall, as i know most american phrases, but not that one. its so confusing.

on topic though, i think your right, siana. i cant think of any other way of it happening. its harry's mind being fooled.

about intangible boggarts, though, i reckon they read minds. boggarts wouldnt know about the teachers and stuff, but when hermione thinks about failure, that is probably what she would see, or something to do with mcgonagall. she is hermiones favorite teacher, after all. maybe hermione is scared of letting mcgonagal down as well, as she is probably her favourite pupil as well. that could be another fear of hermione's as well, letting people down. i dunno, just a thought

Well what if Harry's worst fear isn't a dementor? It's hearing his parents voices before they died. It just so happens that the only way he hears them is if he is approached by a dementor.
Hey, I'd never actually thought of that before I just wrote it, that isn't half bad :D
