Does your family/significant other read Harry Potter?

Which one is your favorite so far. Are they getting even better as the characters develop over time?

My husband has taken me to see the movies (he has to, I went to see Monkeybone because he wanted to two years ago, and I won't let him forget it, so when a movie comes out about twice a year I want to see, he has to take me ), and he listens politely while I ramble on about theories and such... the only thing I've said HP-wise that he's liked was that Aberforth (Dumbledore's brother) got in trouble for performing inappropriate charms on a goat... he nearly fell off the couch laughing...

However, since I've found BaO, he strongly encourages me in getting on and discussing HP for, I think, two reasons. 1. I leave him alone about it. 2. I'm always complaining about having no adult conversation and nothing to use my brain for (I'm a stay-at-home mommy... after a full day of Barney, peek-a-boo and peanut butter sandwiches, I start feeling pretty stupid)...

Since he's into his own weird stuff as much as I'm into Harry Potter, we've come to the conclusion that it's best to take a detatched interest in what the other's obsessions are... So I feign interest in Metroid games and buy him Tim Burton movies for his birthday, and he nods politely while I go off about St. Mungos being corrupt and takes me to see the HP movies when they come out. Works out great.

Well I first started reading Harry Potter when mum bought the third book for my little sister for christmas. My mum always buys my sisters & I a book each at christmas time (our 'christmas book'). She was wondering which book to get for my little sister, and I said "these books look interesting, why don't you get her this one?" I chose out the third book *not knowing they were a series* I didn't know anything about them at this point in time. My little sister didn't show much interest in the book, so after I finished my book, i read hers, and I didn't find out they were a series until I read an interview with JK Rowling in the sunday paper

My cousin is a fan, probably as big as i am, so all my harry potter obsessing is done with her. We went & saw CoS at gold class :D. My little sister finally started reading the books after I kept on saying how good they were, and now she's got every book except the first one (because she says she wants one without the stars that are on the covers of all the books printed after the release of the movies).

I tried to get my older sister to read the books, and finally convinced her a few weeks ago when she had nothing else to read. But she stopped reading it and said "i can't read it because the author is talking down to me! any minute i expect it to say 'stop reading and go to sleep!' or something" so that was a bit pointless.

As for my father & mother... well my dad's a bit oblivious to books. He reads meditation books, and anything by any yoga or peace gurus. He's a new age hippy. My mum reads crime novels.

I don't have a love interest either. Can't say whether or not previous boyfriends liked HP because the topic never came up... I'll let you know next time i meet someone special ;)

My brother read all 5 books, the first four in German and the 4th and 5th in English, I suppose. He likes the books and with him I have someone I can tell all the theories I read on different websites, but he is not as fanatic as I am.
My father tried to read the first book a few years ago and gave it up because he was too confused (too many "muggles", hehe). And my mother hasn't read the books yet (I think I should convince her to try it... but she's still reading The Hobbit or rather starting to start to read it  ) but she supports my hobby and rushed to a bookshop at half past 8 o'clock in the morning to get me the 5th book while I was in school.
Hm, my friends... one of them likes HP, but she's not a very close friend and so we don't have too many conversations. Another friend saw the movies and liked them, but has only read the first two books and half of book 3.

:D Are you too trying to persuade your mom to read 'your' books? I've persuaded her once into reading 'The Hobbit' and she eventually did, but refused to read LOTR afterwards. Then I gave her 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' and she struggled with it for nearly half a year, then phoned me proudly (as if it was a duty) she had managed to finish it. But she seems to be interested in HP... I'll make her read at least one HP book!

I think my husband and I are about to try doing a you-do-my-thing-i'll-do-yours... he's a MAJOR LOTR fan, and I'm a major Harry Potter fan, so I think I'll try reading The Hobbit and the LOTR books, and he'll try reading HP books... so, maybe that'll work out

My brother hates it, what a dork. My sister, on the other hand, is a huge fan, she comes on here and surfs around. My dad likes it and my mother hasn't had the time to read it. None of this stops my sister and I from dragging them to the theatre to see it

I'm reading "Dorian Gray" at the moment, what a coincidence. :) My father wants to read it, too, i'll see how long it will take him to finish it.
My mother knows quite a lot about "my things". We all went to see the 3rd LotR movie and she knows what a hobbit is, for example  And she will try and read "The Hobbit" (and if I have to read it to her ). Unfortunately, the new German translation of "The Lord of the Rings" is a real shame (there's an old and very good version, Tolkien himself helped translate it, but they are selling only the hardcover set which costs about 75 Euros) and she wouldn't understand the English books, so I can't give her LotR. But HP should be fine. Oh, children...

My 'Literature for Children' teacher hates HP so much you wouldn't believe it. He's got his own magazine dealing with literature for children (Bibiana) and is really interested in everything about this kind of literature, but he absolutely hates JKR. I haven't really talked with him about it as he's the kind of man one never knows how he'll react and I don't think it would be safe to mention how I like the books before having my diploma safe in my pocket (he should be in my final exams). Sometimes I have the feeling he hasn't read the books, he's just so biased against anything HP-related. On the other hand, he loves P.Pullman's trilogy as well as LOTR.
