Errors in the HP Books

Which one is your favorite so far. Are they getting even better as the characters develop over time?

SOrry to post a 2nd post...
but it's most likely that the printer and proof-reading computer is the one that mess up, not JK. cause after she sent in her scripts. they have to go through many phases before printing it. and probably cause it's too long and people are demanding it greatly that they can't check it for mistakes. Of course i'm talking about spelling and grammar and such..

In book number 4, when Priori Incantatem is preformed, the spells that Voldermort's wand cast out are all the people he has killed, from his most recent to his first. However the mistake made is as follows: James Potter appears first out of the wand, followed by Lily Potter. This suggests that Lily was killed before James, which we know for a fact is not true.

Do we really know for a fact that that's not true?

In the movie we see Lily opening the door and protecting Harry. No sign of James.

From the 'Internet Movie Database':

In the script, the flashbacks to Voldemort killing Harry's parents were written by J.K. Rowling herself. The producers knew she was the only one who knew exactly what happened.

I think we can say so. Cause in the earlier editions of GoF James comes first (like Rory said) but it was corrected in later ones; for example in my GoF Lily comes out first. Plus that's the way it's described in the books, that James shouts to Lily to take Harry and run while he stayed behind to keep Voldemort back. Voldemort Avada Kedava'd him and then went after Lily and Harry.

I know this is an old thread, but I had to replie.I have to agree Nacht,do we really know what happened? We cannot say anything till the end of 7th book.I think that J.K.Rowling has a lot of suprises left...So this is mistake from HP that you can see on one HP site

Philosopher's Stone

  • Whilst shopping in Diagon Alley, Harry overheads a couple of witches compalining about the price of Dragons liver, "Seventeen sickles an ounce for Dragon Liver. They're mad." But 17 Sickles are equal to 1 Galleon, so she should say 1 Galleon an ounce. What she said would be the same as saying '100 pence an ounce' instead of a pound.
  • In Harry's letter from Hogwarts it says he could bring a cat, an owl, or a toad, but Ron brings his rat, Scabbers

Chamber of Secrets

  • In the first book, Nearly Headless Nick says that he hasn't eaten in "nearly four hundred years." But, in the second book, he's celebrating his "five-hundredth deathday".
  • Tom Riddle says that he and Harry are both half-bloods, but Harry is not half-blood. To be a half-blood, one of your parents must be a Muggle but Harry's father was a Wizard and his mum was a Witch(although she was muggle-born).
  • At the end of the second book Dumbledore tells Harry that Lord Voldemort is the last remaining ancestor of Salazar Slytherin. But it should say that Lord Voldemort is the last remaining descendant of Salazar Slytherin.

Prisoner of Azkaban

  • When they first leave the Shrieking Shack, Crookshanks went first, followed by Lupin, Pettigrew and Ron, and then Snape, Harry and Hermione and finally Sirius. However, when they go back in time and see themselves come out, Lupin, Pettigrew and Ron come out first, followed by Hermione, then Snape, then Harry and Sirius

Goblet of Fire

  • During Priori Incantatem, Voldemort's victims came out in reverse order. But, James came out before Lily. That would mean that James died after he killed Lily and it's said in all the books that Voldemort killed James first. (this was corrected in later editions, if you have a copy with this error it may be worth something in the future).
  • After Hermione dropped Muggle Studies, she said she had the same amount of subjects as Ron and Harry. But she still had Arithmancy, Care of Magical Creatures, and Ancient Runes. Which is more then Harry and Ron who each had only Divination and Care of Magical Creatures.
  • When Fudge, Dumbledore, and Moody are talking about Crouch, instead of Fudge yelling to Dumbledore, it says: "said Crouch angrily". He wasn't in there...they were talking about him, not with him.

Order of the Phoenix

  • Harry uses the Marauders Map throughout the book, but it was taken from him in his fourth year. When and how did he get it back?
  • Harry see Thestrals for the first time in this book(because he has 'seen death'), but Harry saw his mother die when he was a baby. And why didn't he see the Thestrals at the end of GoF just after he'd seen Cedric die? (JK Rowling's response: You can't see the Thestrals until the death "sinks in.")
  • Dennis Creevey attends the DA meeting in The Hog's Head, but he is only in the second year and pupils below the third year aren't allowed out of school during term time.
  • Before a Quidditch match, Harry is relieved it is cloudy as he won't have the sun in his eyes - but moments later the stadium is in "dazzling sunlight".
  • Sirius says Harry's dad, James, was never a prefect - but in an earlier book, Hagrid told Harry his father was head boy. (JK Rowling's response: You don't have to be a prefect to be a Head Boy or Girl.)

Ok... i can give you answer for some of this so called "errors"...

Fluffy bear wrote:Whilst shopping in Diagon Alley, Harry overheads a couple of witches compalining about the price of Dragons liver, "Seventeen sickles an ounce for Dragon Liver. They're mad." But 17 Sickles are equal to 1 Galleon, so she should say 1 Galleon an ounce. What she said would be the same as saying '100 pence an ounce' instead of a pound.

I don't know where do you live, but I'm from Portugal, and we use the Euro. I often say 100 cents instead of 1 Euro, cause I understand the value of the money better this way...

Fluffy Bear wrote:At the end of the second book Dumbledore tells Harry that Lord Voldemort is the last remaining ancestor of Salazar Slytherin. But it should say that Lord Voldemort is the last remaining descendant of Salazar Slytherin.

It was corrected in later versions.

Fluffy Bear wrote:Harry uses the Marauders Map throughout the book, but it was taken from him in his fourth year. When and how did he get it back?

It was taken by Moody, and DD could have given it to Harry once he knew
the true identity of Crouch Jr.

Fluffy Bear wrote:Harry see Thestrals for the first time in this book(because he has 'seen death'), but Harry saw his mother die when he was a baby. And why didn't he see the Thestrals at the end of GoF just after he'd seen Cedric die? (JK Rowling's response: You can't see the Thestrals until the death "sinks in.")

Harry wasn't fully aware of his mother's death. He didn't really see is mother die, but only realized that much much later.

I believe the others are real errors, but maybe the one on Dennis Creevy is the only one that might be considered a real error: can just be corrected printing a new version, without changing anything else on the book.

I don't like to search errors in the book either, and I don't.These errors are from HP fan site!

We don't usually count such small money.Our 68 dinars are 1 Euro,and our,let say,"pennies" => 100"pennies"(para)=1 dinar;68 dinars=1 Euro so you count,and it doesn't pay of to count "pennies"

Well, I think its just a way of complaining, seventeen sickles sounds like more money than one galleon a bit like a 500 metres sounds like less that half a kilometre... (at least it the case for me)

this is a major flaw that i have spotted. i hope there is an explanation

you cannot apparate or disapparate out of hogwarts. but in book 2
Dobby apparates into the hospital wing to meet Harry. also he disapparates at the end of the book

if house elves can break this rule then it would be so easy to send one to kill Harry
