I still wonder what James and Lily Potter's cut and dried careers were. I mean if they worked as Ministry law enforcers or quiidditch player or whatever, why would the Dursleys just lie and say they were unemployed. They could have just said police officers or football player you know, just give it a twist?

Yeah, my guess is that they wanted Harry to look at his parents the same way they do, as lowlifes, goodfornothings. And for the Dursleys there's almost nothing as bad as someone who's unemployed.
It would be nice if James was a Quidditch player, but I don't know, wouldn't there be photos of that in Harry's album? Like photo's from the Daily Prophet or something?
