Sleeping dragons

In Hogwarts' coat of arms (you know, the one where the symbols of all 4 houses are included), there is a banner saying "Draco dormiens numquam titiliandus"-Never tickle a sleeping dragon. Does anybody have an idea what this could have to do with Hogwarts?

maybe its a godric gryffindor thing...he does own that broad sword after all, perhaps he had a bad encounter with a dragon.....or maybe its just dragons were more common at the time of the founders....

"Draco" means dragon, so it is just coincidence.

maybe it could be a theory, about a dragon in Hogwarts that is asleep; maybe there is a legend (about Hogwarts) that will know in the next books.

I'm not sure about this, but I think that I read/heard somewhere taht JK didnt' want to motto to be something lame like most schools have (I know that my schools were pretty lame) and wanted it to be a funny yet good piece of advice...

after all, it woud be a pretty silly to go up and tickle a sleeping dragon... you might just find yourself burnt to a crisp!!!

And with the connection to Draco... I noticed it a while ago, and spent a bit of time trying to somehow connect them, but couldnt' think of anything, so I reckon that it's just a coincidence!

i was always convinced it was a dum,bledore thing till you realise that it cant be unless he changed it when he joined but i doubt he would...but dont you think it sounds like a very Dumbledore kind of statement....

yeah, i think that it is just a piece of advice, Draco is just the latin word for dragon, and i think that it might be a coinsidence about Malfoy, or maybe not seeing as how Lucius comes from Lucifer

I don't think there's any deeper meaning to the motto- it's just a motto, perhaps telling the students, as someone said before, to avoid trouble. Be careful not to overanalyze

Maybe Goddric or one of he other founders *probably not Salazar* had the same "genius/quirky sense of humour" thing going for him lie DD has???

It would have been established when the school was founded, no?

i bet it was Godric...he seems the kind to give advice about not upsetting dragons....hes the warrior/brave/heroic type one out of the four...i cant see it being salazar, ravenclaw strikes me as too wise for something as silly as tickling dragons....and despite hufflepuffs here being loopy i dont think the helga hufflepuff person would have said that

it best fits the godric person i think....specially as gryffindor and slytherin always seem to be the strongest of the houses and the other two just follow

Well, that's the thing. Apart from Salazar, we really dont' know much about the personalities of the founders. They could be very different from how we imagine them, after all, we only know what they looked for in their students, not what they were like... *roundabout there a little*

Also, it would besomething like; DD is very wise but strangely quirky, ravenclaws are supposed to be wise...

BUt allt hat considered, I do think that its' most likely that it was Goddric... not because the other two houses are followers, but becuase Griff and Slyth have such big roles int eh books that the others are left out in more things...
