Dumbledore avoiding eye contact

Postby Nothlit » Monday 23 June 2003 4:51:35am

You might consider this post to contain spoilers, so if you haven't read the book, don't read on...

Okay, I'm confused, but that's to be expected after just finishing 870 pages. ;) Dumbledore explains to Harry near the end of the book that he had been avoiding eye contact this whole time to protect himself from Voldemort, who might be able to possess Harry and see into Hogwarts at what Dumbledore was up to. Now, unless I am horribly delusional and terribly mistaken, wasn't there at least one instance during the book where the two did make eye contact, and Harry's scar burned? What's that all about?

Please just tell me if I'm stark raving mad and this never actually happened...but for some reason, I seem to remember it...

Yeha, that did happen, and then Harry wanted to bite DD, just as he did with Mr Weasley... that was Voldie taking control of his thoughts kind of... Or Voldie seeing through his eyes, and his desire to bite DD coming through into Harry's thoughts more to the point!

So DD was right about it.

Did that help at all???

I think that's one reason DD wanted Harry to learn Occlumency. besides stopping the dreams, it would also serve to block all of Voldie's power in harry's mind.
DD didn't make eye contact with Harry because he knew something liek that was happening and he didn't want Voldie to get a chance at him or to know that he and Harry were good friends.

Yeah, I understood all that. I just couldn't remember if there was ever any occasion when Harry wasn't being "possessed" or whatever, that merely looking at Dumbledore caused him pain. But I guess that never happened.

No, that didn't happen.

DD avoid eye contact all the time, and Harry felt frusted about this. But if LV can see through Harry, then there is the chance that Voldemort knows the propechy, no?

pretty much I understood from the book too elvenmist.

What I understood was that Voldemort was good at reading peoples minds, and that though Harry he could read Dumbledores mind, ie make him a danger, or even though Harry try to control Dumbledore or attack him somehow (but you would of thought that Dumbledore could deal with this if Voldemort did), and thats why Dumbledore did not look at harry, and he also said that this was pointless at the end as Harry has something in him to stop Voldemort from doing this, but personally I would of thought that Dumbledore should of worried anyway, I mean okay Eye contact might stop Voldemort from reading Dumbledores mind, but Harry could still attack Dumbledore in other ways if processed.
