Touching Quotes

Postby Mistress Siana » Sunday 27 February 2005 12:26:15am

We've had threads about the funniest quotes so far, but are there any quotes from the Harry Potter books you find really touching?

Those two are from Goblet of fire:

"Remember Cedric. Remember, if the time should come when you have to make a choice between what is right and what is easy, remember what happened to a boy who was good, and kind, and brave, because he strayed across the path of Lord Voldemort. Remember Cedric Diggory."
From Albus Dumbledore. There was a cold shiver running down my spine when they raised their glasses to Cedric.

"They all went quiet in the end...except when they shrieked in their sleep."

“Your mother died to save you. If there is one thing Voldemort cannot understand, it is love. He didn’t realize that love as powerful as your mother’s for you leaves its own mark. Not a scar, no visible sign . . . to have been loved so deeply, even though the person who loved us is gone, will give us some protection forever. It is in your very skin. Quirrell, full of hatred, greed, and ambition, sharing his soul with Voldemort, could not touch you for this reason. It was agony to touch a person marked by something so good.”

This is not that touching, but very wise:

"If you want to know what a man's like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals." Sirius Black, Goblet of Fire

"They just looked at him, smiling. And slowly, Harry looked into the faces of the other people in the mirror and saw other pairs of green eyes like his, other noses like his, even a little old man who looked as though he had Harry's knobbly knees - Harry was looking at his family, for the first time in his life...The Potters smiled and waved at Harry and he stared hungrily back at them, his hands pressed flat against the glass as though he was hoping to fall right through it and reach them. He had a powerful kind of ache inside him, half joy, half terrible sadness." Chapter 12, pg. 151 book 1

i thought that was a pretty touching quote.

I find Ch 37 OotP to be particularly poignant, but here are some of the excerpts from that chapter that really hit home to me:

(DD is explaining to Harry why he didn't tell him more sooner...)

"I cared about you too much," said Dumbledore simply. "I cared more for your happiness than your knowing the truth, more for your peace of mind than my plan, more for your life than the lives that might be lost if the plan failed.. In other words, I acted exactly as Voldemort expects we fools who love to act."

(DD continues with his explanation over the next couple of pages and the chapter ends with:)

Harry looked up at him and saw a tear trickling down Dumbledore's face into his long silver beard.

This chapter brings me to tears every time!

the prophecy......
"THE 1 WITH THE POWER 2 VANQUISH THE DARK LORD APPROACHES... BORN TO THOSE WHO HAVE THRICE DEFIED HIM, BORN AS THE SEVENTH MONTH DIES.... AND THE DARK LORD WILL MARK HIM AS HIS EQUAL, BUT HE WILL HAVE POWER THE DARK LORD KNOWS NOT... AND EITHER MUST DIE AT THE HAND OF THE OTHER FOR NEITHER SHALL LIVE WHILE THE OTHER SURVIVES.... THE ONE WITH THE POWER TO VANQUISH THE DARK LORD WILL BE BORN AS THE SEVENTH MONTH DIES"
