I didn't know where to put this, but...

My little sister is a Labor and Delivery nurse at a local hospital. She just got the job over there, and she was so excited, and has really really enjoyed it. After all, Labor and Delivery is the happy part of the hospital, and she's loved it.

Well, up until either Saturday or yesterday. One of her patients lost the baby (it was stillborn) but she was full-term, so they did a c-section, and the woman died on the operating table.

Becca's having a really really hard time dealing with it, it was the first patient she's lost, and I would really appreciate it if you guys could say a little prayer for her, and naturally for the family of the woman and baby.

I know how your sister feels, because of the field I work in.
When I did my rotation at the large teaching hospital here when I was still a student I was given the task of doing post mortum x-rays of two babies that were still born.
The doctor brought them to the pediatric x-ray department in a brown paper shopping bag.
This was a very upsetting thing and I was quite young at the time. I will indeed remember your sister in my prayers.

I was a student at the time so we are talking 16 years ago.

I thought that it was pretty gross and I was shocked that that was the mode of transportation in a large respected teaching hospital.

It is not something I will forget easily.

*shudders* i bet...

now, at least, the hospitals here i know encourage the parents of a stillborn baby to hold it, name it, even dress it and take pictures of and with it, just like they would a live baby, to be able to mourn a loved child instead of an unnamed baby. But I think that's only fairly recent.

That is nuts! My brother in law is a coroner for a CSI in Atlanta, whenever he talks about it, (which isn't alot) he says they're suppost to be brought in in special body bags, not plain old shopping bags. That is insane, I would take it as disrespect for the dead.

BTW, I will pray for them, that is very sad.

My mother lost a son that was still born and almost my little sister. Faith is the only thing that kept her from being suicidal. My thoughts and prayers are with your family and the baby's.

okay, well, since earlier i was nervous about asking her any questions, and i haven't gotton on really recently, i found out some accurate information (i heard everything else, like, third-hand)

The baby is healthy. The woman bled out after the baby was born. The woman had had a baaaaad pregnancy, was morbidly overweight, and that really complicated things. So, in a weird way, we can say thanks for part of what we thought was bad (that the baby's okay).

This post is not to take away from Athena's little sister.

I am posting this here because my daughter Emily needs your prayers just now and the title of the thread says it all.

Emily is my four year old (as of tomorrow) and she had a serious accident today. She was playing over at the neighbors house along with all of the other kids. seven in all.
They have several motorcycles and the kids were playing in and around the car port when one of them, a six hundred pound Harley, fell on Emily crushing her leg.
She broke both bones in her lower leg. One of the bones is a comminuted fracture which means it is broken into several pieces, the other bone is a diagonal break that is now separated even more since a full leg cast has been put on.
She is in extreme amounts of pain and may be looking at surgery. What the Orthopedic doctor told us is that we have to wait now to see how the bones begin to heal. If they start to separate, then the cast will be removed and she will have to have surgery. In the event of surgery she will either have plates and screws put around the fracture sites of both bones or she will have an IM or Intermedulary rod put in her leg. What that means is a metal rod is inserted down the center of the bone where the bone marrow is. Both of these are permanent but the IM rod would be a problem because she is still growing and the rod will have to be replaced as she grows meaning more surgeries through out her growing years.
The concern now is that from the time she had the first X-rays taken, the cast put on, then had the second X-ray, the main break has gotten bigger. That means that the bones fragments are further apart than when she had the first X-ray. This does not bode well for a non-surgical outcome. She will be seen by the Orthopedic Surgeon sometime during the up coming week and have another X-ray. I'll let you know what that picture shows but if you wouldn't mind keeping her in your prayers for the next week my entire family would appreciate it.
