Who is Mundungus Fletcher???

Postby Holly Golightly » Saturday 12 April 2003 2:36:10pm

At the end of the fourth book, a few people are mentioned, Luipn, who we all know, Arabella Figg, who we've been told is the Mrs Figg who used to baby-sit Harry, and Mundungus Fletcher...

Now, on reading through the series again, I found Mundungus Fletcher mentioned in GoF again, something that I have never noted before... Aparently, after the World Cup, he put in an order for a 12brm tent, etc, etc, so Percy tells us.

Yes I know, who really cares, but I'm wondering why he was mentioned there at all? And how on earth this could have any relevance anywhere at all in the rest of the series? Or why he would have been mentioned there if there was no relevance to it?

Mainly, I think I was just amazed to see it there, and was wondering if anyone else has any ideas on what the go is?

Is anyone else getting the vibe that sometimes, by reading stuff too often, we begin to over-analyse?

*hrmm, that was a all a bit long, wasn't it???*

well, he's part of the "old crowd" so he can't be a bad guy, or maybe he's a traitor, who knows

In the first book, when the Dursleys are trying to find someone to babysit Harry while they take Dudley to the zoo, Rowling mentions that Harry is usually sent to Mrs. Figg's house, where she makes him look at pictures of her dead cats.

ok, found it...I knew i had read it somewhere:

http://www.scholastic.com/harrypotter/a ... cript2.htm

It doesn't really say it straight forward but it does state it (it is quite the way down...)

Q: Is the Mrs. Figg with all the cats in the Dursleys' neighborhood the same Arabella Figg that Dumbledore mentioned at the end of book 4?

JKR: Well spotted!

usually check all my facts at the harry potter lexicon. If the person that runs that site is off their rocker then they have a lot of time on their hands because it is the most put together and informative site I have ever been to. It has about a million links to it and explains almost everything and also includes a section on theories and either totally picks them apart and throws them away or confirms them.

LOL . . . I'm confused . . . where is Boycey on this thread? Are you having a 'Ravenclaw moment', Holly? (I'm teasing!)

So who *is* this Fletcher anyway? Any ideas people? From what Holly has written, he doesn't seem very nice, but then again, seeing as Arabella Figg = Mrs. Figg, she isn't either, so who knows?! All very confusing . . .

I hope someone has some ideas . . . I'm going to have to dig out my books again . . . :-)

Hrmm, Boycey was writing about it in another Section of the forum... might have been rumours, not quite sure, and we said that there was already a topic on it, and I posted, to bump it up to the top... ;)

We dont' really know that Mrs Figg isn't that nice... I mean, okies, she wasn't all peaches and cream to Harry, and she's a bit obsessive with her cats, but maybe she had a good reason for not showing him any sort of affection...

But I'm really interested in Mundungeous Fletcher... for him to ahve come up three times so far kinda hints to me that he's going to play a big part in the upcoming books... He seems to be a little on the Moody side of life, with the Hexing Mr Weasley, which isnt' necessarily a bad trait... but the thing with the tent really confuses me... why would he try to do something so dodgy??? Or, was Percy wrong... Maybe it was a legitamite claim after all, and Percy was just thinking of someone else he saw???

I think Percy is right, that Mundugus tried to say he used avery expensive tent, just because he is in money troubles, same for the raids, maybe he needed the dark objects to sell them, so he got mad to Mr.Weasley. Because except from D all the "old crow" seems to have problems or troubles, Lupin, Sirius, Mrs. Figg (the Potters ae dead of course)
