Father of Sirius Black

Postby _tonks_ » Wednesday 24 August 2005 11:20:58am

I made this topic, because I didn't know where to search for this:

Who is the father of Sirius Black? Is he somewhere mentioned in the books? I think this is important... if someone knows, please tell me.

Thanks.

I don't have my books at the moment, but I think it's mentioned in book 5 when Sirius is showing Harry the Black family tree on the tapestry in Grimmauld Place...

Nearly the whole familiy is mentioned namely, but not Sirius' father... isn't this a little bit odd?

He's mentioned as existing, but no real information is given about him.

We know that Kreacher wasn't as devoted to him, but was still caught snogging a pair of his trousers. (I don't know why he had trousers since he was such a pure-blood maniac, but it might have something to do with dressing in disguise for muggle baiting and the like.)

We know he was a dark wizard like the rest of the family, and he was in Slytherin like the rest of the family.

We know he thought Voldemort had the right idea.

We know he put a lot of protection on the house. (Like making the place unplottable, even though Dumbledore said he made the house unplottable in HBP, but OotP came before and is therefore the correct version in my mind.)

We know he's dead and likely died before his wife.

We know he was probably the oldest male in his family since he inherited Grimmauld Place.

Sirius doesn't like talking about his family and for good reason. He's ashamed to be related to such horrible people. I don't see how it's odd that Mr. Black is never really mentioned. Mrs. Black would have likely been mentioned to the same, small respect if it weren't for her portrait. Regulus has only come up in passing and there still isn't much known about him. He's been mentioned less than 6 times in two books. People just don't realize that as much because now everyone's talking about him because he's the prime suspect for R.A.B.

We also only know about Narcissa and Bellatrix because they're playing roles now. Notice how we hear little about Andromeda even though she's believed to still be alive (Tonks used present tense the few times she mentioned her), she was Sirius' only decent family member, and her daughter is nearly a main character.

Anyway, why do you think Mr. Black is so important _tonks_? I'm not accusing or anything, I just want a hear the theory, because it sounds like one I haven't heard before.

Hi Mrs. Luca Black,

I just wondered about who could be R.A.B. and what are the names of the other family members as Mrs. Black played a role in OoP but not Mr. Black I wondered why... Wouldn't he also shout if people he doesn't like meet in his house, why is no picture from him in the house, if he was the owner of the house before? And is he mentioned to be dead? It could be possible, that Regulus is named also after him, maybe his name begins also with an A. or something, like it is with other people in the book, too. I was just wondering...

Best regards,

I think that Sirius's father is really dead. Or else why would the house, together with Kreacher, come into Harry's possesion? Isn't there a spell that says that only the oldest, alive member of the Black family can take over the house? I think this was the same argument someone used to prove Regulus is dead. Though as far as I can remember JKR said herself that he (Regulus) is definitly dead.

Though we can never be too sure who R.A.B. is...So I guess your theory might just as well be good. But I find Regulus more plausible.

I thought it was the first really important Black that made the charms on the house. I don't know why I was left with this ideea. His name slips my mind right now, but I'm talking about the one that was headmaster at Hogwarts.

ah...Phineas

You really have to wonder with JKR in regards to whether or not "it's what you don't know that counts"!

According to JKR, when we finish the 7th book, in her mind, we won't need a prequel or anything as we'll have all the backstory we'll need, which makes me think book 7 must be HUGE to answer all those unanswered questions such as Sirius's dad's name, etc. I didn't realize his name wasn't mentioned...makes me think re-reading book 5 wouldn't be such a bad idea. :D

Sirius said that it was his father that put the charms on the house. I would pull out the book and give you the quote, but my book is packed since it's going with me to college.

I don't even think that Phineas was a Black. He's already referred to as Phineas Nigellus, which sounds like a last name, and all the other headmasters/mistresses are referred to with their last names. It would be odd if Black was always left off his name. I don't know how exactly he is Sirius' great-grandfather, but he is.

He could be on Sirisus' mother's side of the family. Mayber her maiden name was Nigellus?

Yes you are right. Sorry my mistake...

Though I find it odd that Sirius is aparently Phineas Great Great grand son. only on a male line...shoudn't he have inheierted the name? Or I might just be so wrong (again!) about this...
