Norbert's Return

Postby Gypsy » Saturday 5 June 2004 5:35:41pm

I was re-reading PS last night when i got to the chapter entitled 'Norbert the Norwegian Ridgeback', and whilst reading it I wondered why JK didn'n bring back Norbert for the 1st task of the Triwizard Tournament. Surely it would have been more fun to fight Norbert than an unknown dragon.
It then occured to me that the dragon's for the task had to be female as they were garding eggs, but I saw no reason why Norbert couldnt have been made female in the first place for this purpose. This got me thinking as to Norbert's functions in the book, as far as the plot is concerned. The only reason I see for which Norbert is required by the plot is so that Harry gets caught sneaking around at night so that he gets detention and has to go to the forest, where he first realises that the stone is being stolen to resurrect Voldemort. Harry could just as easily have been caught on his trips to and from the Mirror of Erised, and this otherwise seemingly irrelevant chapter could have been omitted. Norbert was left out of the first film entirely, as he has so little impact on the plot. All this leads me to the conclusion that, as JK never or rarely includes things in her books that are not important to the series as a whole, I think Norbert wil return in one of the last two books to fulfill his as yet unclear purpose.

But when the film makers made the film, didn't they talk to JK about it, to make sure that they weren't leaving out relevant bits? If Norbert does have a significant role to play in future, then maybe JK wouldn't have been very happy about him being left out.

I think the sole point of Norbie was to let Harry meet Voldemort/Quirrel in the forest.

I am confused. Am I mis-reading this quote?
Norbert was in the first movie.
What am I missing? :???:

As for my opinion on the subject I do not believe that we will see Norbert again.
Anything of course is possible.
Maybe he will make an apperance in the final battle if it were to have all sorts of creatures in it. That would be the only way I could imagine it happening. (Not the final battle; but working Norbert back in)

:-) I once made up a theory and told my it to my friends, it went like this.
Hagrid becomes deppressed and norbie, feeling this strong tug of emotions, is compelled to fly back and comfort hagrid. However norbie is now so big that when he comes back he squishes the school and part of a certain place I would rather not mention squishes LV :-) sorry that might not have suited a serious board like this one

Norbet ( sort of indirectly being only an egg at the time) allowed voldemort/quirrel to find out how to get past fluffy.

It also allowed for the introduction of Ron's brother Charlie into the story

Plus, it set up the storyline of Hagrid's love for illegal and dangerous pets.

In P/SS, Hagrid has Norbert for a pet illegally.
In CoS, Hagrid has Aragog for a pet (this is probably the most relevant storyline involving Hagrid's pets)
In PoA, Hagrid has Buckbeak, and Buckbeak is really a major storyline in PoA.
In GoF, Hagrid has the skrewts, and he interbreeded the skrewts illegally.

Alice, you're not crazy, Norbert is in the first movie.

i'm not too sure, that norbert has a further significant role to play in the future books.

just maybe that there is a dragon out there somewhere ready to fight for good against evil?

And in OotP, Hagrid has the Thestrals, which plays quite an important role, right?

I wonder what will happen in Book 6 and 7? More of Hagrid's interesting pets?

I remembered reading a part where Harry dreamt about the Slytherin riding on dragons in a quidditch match? I mean dragons cannot be tamed and Slytherins were able to ride them? Dragons are often associated with evil, dark forces. I'll not be surprised if dragons appear next after giants/dementors...but seriously it'll be a little too cheesy to have dragons involved.

I suppose, but then it depends on the way they are included, JKR has a way of putting things so they seem amazing not cheesy

yeah i see how dragons fighting could be cheesy but dragons cannot be tamed can they?

what would their instincts be? to fight good or evil or both or eachother?

Again I say why the obssesion with Norbie? He was just a tool to get them into the forest.

Dragons probably will probably have much to do with the war if my theory a war in the making is correct.
