I think when it says "thrice defied him" means Voldy prolly asked them to come over to the Dark Side once then James and Lily escaped from his clutches the other two times.

Can a mod come and lock those other two threads identical to this one, they're kinda getting on my nerves b/c I thought they were all different.

anyway... I agree with EWPZ, and also think that it could have been a kind of mini-battle, like what happened in the department of mysteries...

I don't think it was important or dramatic or anything like that... Lily and James (and Alice and Frank) had just come into contact with Voldemort and things didn't go as Voldy had planned three times... it could either have been that they just said they weren't joining over (which is entirely possible, since they were all exceptional wizards and witches) or that they survived these little mini-battles...
