The two way mirror returns.....?

Postby Emma'I'm a real witch' » Thursday 18 March 2004 9:38:18pm

In the recent web chat with JK Rowling, someone asks whether the two-way mirror that Sirius gave to Harry will ever show up again, and she just says "oooh good question".
Now when Sirius gave it to Harry it had a note that said him and James used to use it in detention. So then do you think this means that there is some sort of enchantment on it that Harry can re-do to make it so he can talk to someone else. (I know he smashed it but I'm assuming it can be repaired)And if so, who do you think he would use it to talk to??

for safety reasons, the students aren't to discuss any Order business through owls or fires... maybe it's a way to communicate with the Order?

Ok, there is a problem with the mirror coming back!

Sirius once said to Harry that if he needs him, he can communicate with him through the 2 way mirror. This means that Sirius had the mirror with him all the time. And as we all know, Sirius went down the veil and presto, the mirror was gone too!

However, I chose to believe the fact that Sirius never had the mirror with him all the time. (I said that in What If section) And so the mirror is somewhere out there, perhaps Kreacher have it...

OK, back to the qns, if the mirror really appears next, I think either Ron, Luna or Remus will use it to contact Harry. It is just a hunch that Luna will use it.

I'm not sure how, but I do believe the mirror will return in one way or another.
I just think it's so unlike JK to bring in an item like this, just to let it remain unused, without any significance to the plot whatsoever.

When I read about the mirror in OotP I got the impression that it was not a unique item.
I don't see why other people couldn't have a set of these things.
I also agree that Sirius did not have the mirror with him when he went through the veil.

hmmm... J.K. Rowling has stated that the summer after his fifth year is the shortest period of time Harry spends at Privet Drive...

I gotta admit, when I saw someone say that Ron might use the mirror to contact Harry, I was fairly confused (after all, they're best friends, they're together 24/7... why would Ron need a mirror to contact someone who sleeps in the next bed)... UNLESS it was used during the summer...

*shrug* don't know where I'm going with this, though

Harry broke it didn't he? When he chucked it into his trunk?
Maybe someone evil has gotten hold of it, and is watching everything Harry does  :o
Ooh I can think of many crazy ideas, but none that are remotely likely to come true

Why can't he just fix it.
I mean is there anything that states that if a magical object that is broken it can not be repared with the "reparo" charm?

I know that it got broken but I'm assuming that it can be fixed (reparo?) it is after all only glass.
I think by Sirius saying Harry could get hold of him whenever he wanted with it that he was assuming that he wasn't leaving Grimmauld Place, he wasn't exactly planning on going to MoM was he? So maybe it is at the house.

Emma we posted at the same time with the same thought.

I think that Sirius' mirror is at Grimuald Place and someone made a point that mabe Kretcher is using it to spy on Harry but if Harry has not yet repaired his mirror then I don't think it will work.
Great idea though!

Great minds think alike eh??

I don't think Kreacher could use it to spy on Harry. I think when Sirius gave it to Harry he said 'look into it and say my name' but maybe he has to reply for the connection to work?? I don't know, I just thought it was significant that JK wouldn't say what would happen about it.

I'll bet ya it comes back in the next book.
I included it in the book I'm writing because my goodness what a useful tool.
Of course I am using it to foil Malfoy Sr. and Jr.!

 lordy, lordy, I go away for a day and you folks go post-crazy on me!!!

Okay:

Reparo charm: could be, she makes a point of showing it can fix things, but not make things exactly new...

Mirror at Grimmauld: don't think so... If it had been me, I would have kept with me any POSSIBLE (even if it's unprobable) tool to reach Harry before he got too deep into the Ministry of Magic... so I would have been calling "HARRY POTTER!!!" into that mirror, praying that he would pick up.

Mirror being used again: most likely... haven't a clue how, though?

Kreacher using it: once again, don't think so... if elves aren't allowed to use wands, I don't get the feeling they'd be allowed to use a lot of random mysterious magical objects.... but that's just my feeling, no proof to back it up... however, I don't think Kreacher would use it to reach Harry, because... well, I just don't. I don't think it fits in with Kreacher. I would see Dobby (if he were in a position to have the opportunity and need for it) using it to reach Harry, but not Kreacher.

Not all elves follow the rules and regulations. For eg, Kreacher, although his master was (sad to use the word 'was') Sirius, he didn't obey every command. There might be some bad elves around, rebellious ones that wants to break out from the 'rules' that binds them.

As for Ron and Harry using the mirror, well Sirius and James are definitely 24/7 too. I am trying to say maybe Ron and Harry will use it the same way Sirius and James did - during the dreadful, long detention
