I don't know were to put this or if someone has already brought this up sorry if they have. But if you can't see thestrals until you see someone die why couldn't Harry see them after his first year when he saw someone die. He killed professor Quirrel.

Well... Harry didn't actually see Quirrel die, he fainted and dumbledore finished it off. It was only on the film that he killed him himself.

Dumbledore didn't kill Quirrel- he died when Voldemorts spirit left his body. Harry would have been unconcious at this point so would not have seen it.
You could argue that he'd seen his parents die, but he was only 1 and probably asleep.
I may remember this wrong (i don't have my copy of OotP with me) but couldn't Neville also see the thestrals- who did he see die- it may be mentioned, but i've forogtten if so.

if i remember correctly Neville, when asked the question, stammered nervously and said he saw his grandfather die. The stammering makes me wonder if he really saw his grandfather die or was it someone else...???

Yes! The fact he was stammering just shows us how shy he is (and maybe the fact he was close to some Slytherin!!)
