Small bit in book 2 that is big in book 6

Postby Ginny Malfoy » Tuesday 30 December 2003 1:11:56am

I remember reading somewhere that something relatively incidental that is mentioned or happens in CoS becomes something rather big in book 6. I'm new here, but I've been re-reading my Harry Potter books, and I was wondering if anyone else was as curious as myself as to what this might be.

Right now, my speculation is that Hagrid being expelled from school, which is talked about in book 2, but not in any great detail, will feature big in book 6. I think Hagrid's going to become a student again in book 6! It's entirely possible that I'm wrong, but I thought it might be interesting. The reason that Hagrid was expelled was because of Tom Riddle, but Hagrid's expulsion has been mentioned more times than that...it just seems to me something may happen with it.

What do you think is the small thing in book 2 that plays a large part in book 6?

If i had to guess...I would say that it would be Harry pulling the sword out of the hat. Dumbledore says that "only a true Gryffindor could have pulled that out of the hat." I think this is going to play a major part in the final books.

Actually, I think the sword could be it. Athought there is the chance that it is something else. However the sword has to have some other significance other than just saying that he is a true gryffindor, you know. Yet it just might be as small as Mrs. Norris or the Kwik Spell kit...or what the trio had for breakfast...JKR has an amazing way of taking seemingly minor details and making it the heart of it all

hm...I still cling to my theory that it has a specific meaning that it was Snape who exposed Harry as a parseltongue by making Harry and Draco duell partners in the first place and then telling Draco explicitly to use Serpensortia...

ooh... snape might have known! but voldie didn't know harry had some of his power, thats why harry got away in book 4, right? so if snape didn't find that out from voldie... then where did he find out? i mean, sure, it could have been coincidence, but i think it would be cool if it weren't

I think it's a strange coincidence:
Lucius Malfoy arranges for the Chamber of Secrets to be opened again by giving Ginny Tom Riddel's diary, and shortly after, Snape "accidently" exposes Harry as a parseltongue-which doesn't only discredit Harry, but finally leads to his confrontation with Voldemort's former self, which almost kills him.

one thing i was thinking about when i read CoS was when harry ended up in nocturn alley instead of diagon alley, he bumped into hagrid there. what was hagrid doing there. i cant remember whether that was ever answered or not?

I don't recall what the reason was in the book, but in the movie he was going to get flesh eating slug repellant for the school's cabbages...or something like that.

yeah, but in the movie, his answer sounded kinda made up-maybe just to make people expect him to be the one who opened he CoS...

ok, this just hit me last night. what about aragog(sp?) the spider that hagrid took care of. he's still alive and maybe he'll have a bigger part in book 6. but than again, probably not. what are your thoughts.

Hagrid was getting flesh eating slug repellent in the book as well. They made it seem like Hagrid was lying in the movie because they wanted people to believe it was Hagrid that opened the chamber. Hagrid is way too loyal and brave to go to the dark side. :D

I just re-watched the interview with JKR and Steve Kloves on the CoS DVD. Listening carefully, I think they inadvertently gave away some clues.

JKR said that when Steve was writing the CoS screenplay, he nearly left something out that figures largely in book 6. So, from that I can infer that the small bit in book 2 that is big in book 6 is IN movie #2. That means the things that movie #2 left out are NOT the small bit that figures big in book 6. That at least narrows it down.

Further narrowing it down, Steve Kloves said there was a part IN "The Chamber" not in "Chamber" (which is how he refers to CoS) which makes me think the small bit is something that happened or is shown in the Chamber of Secrets itself in book 2. The most obvious guess, to me, would be Harry being the heir of Gryffindor. Any other speculations? :???:

gees, that must be a very big clue! In movie no 1, they even left out the reason why Snape hates Harry, so that must be even bigger than that!

hmm...i think it has something to do with wormtail. and that would tie in with wormtail being absent in book 5. but i dunno what is is yet. maybe "scabbers" does something that is significant.
