Was it really Trelawney herself who prophesied?

Postby Vivian Borgin » Wednesday 6 August 2003 6:13:39am

I just mentioned this on Prof. Trelawney's thread in Book 5 Characters. I thought it might be worth mentioning here. I dunno...it seemed more appropriate as a theory. What do you think?

I wonder...were her two true prophecies necessarily her own Seeing? Sight? (not sure how you'd refer to the Seer's gift when it's in use; but, anyway...) Could it be at all possible that the prophecies were actually some kind of possession taking place? Books 3 and 5, neither of which I have on me, mention that she loses consciousness; and a harsh, rasping voice, totally unlike her normal dreamy, airy, $20 psychic act, takes over when the prophecies are each made. That doesn't sound like a vision made by a prophet to me; it sounds like possession. Obviously, it couldn't be possession by Voldypie, because both involve him and Harry as subjects, and because he's so curious to hear the original one all during Book 5. But who, or what, else could be possessing Trelawney and maybe communicating through her? Some ghost who knew of Voldie's plans while s/he was living? The ghost of Grandma Cassandra T.? Something we haven't met yet?

Excellent Vivian! I'm glad that you decided to start this theory up in here too!

Personally, I like that idea that the prophecies are coming from her great-great grandmother's spirit (or whatever!)> It just seems to fit, since Trewlaney doesn't show any other signs of Seeing, or having the Inner Eye!!! :D

Ooooh! That sounds like it could be true. Trelawny sounds different and she never remembers her predictions.......

Well we don't know for sure that she is being possessed. That could be how true predictions are made, but because Trelawny is such an old fraud we've only seen one true prediction from her.

i think that that is just what people do when they "See", i mean dumbledore said she had only made one prediction before in book 3, in reference to "the prophecy"

He might regard it as a harmless sort of possession (if such a thing exists! ) I'm not sure. Maybe he only alerted Harry to his own possession b/c the possessor, Ole Voldy, meant it for harm. I dunno.

Could be. It sounded to me, during D's explanation at the end, like he agreed to take on T (and the subject of Divination itself) after she made the prediction. It almost sounded as if it scared him a little, or at least made him uneasy. Somebody of D's magical capability probably doesn't scare too easily, either. Maybe he wasn't at all sure just what kind of supernatural forces he was dealing with, and what could happen to Prof. T, himself or, eventually Harry. I think I'm going to re-read that chapter and turn the idea over some more.

would DD have taken her on to protect her. If Voldemort knew that she had made the prophecy, wouldn't he try to get to her to find out what it was? (Regardless of whether she could remember what she said!)

Dumbledore

Postby highsorcerer » Saturday 9 August 2003 8:04:44pm

Yes, I very strongly feel that Dumbledore was acting to protect Sibyll from harm. She was a source of the prophecy. Voldemort would not have hesitated at causing her grave injuries or death if he got her - even if she didn't know her prophecies.

I agree that Dumbledore is protecting Trewlaney. Hogwarts is the one safe haven from Lord Voldemort and even after Umbridge fired her Dumbledore made sure that she stayed there.

Yeah, DD did seem very intent on keeping Sybil at Hogwarts,e ven when she wanted to leave in shame at being fired... so I would say that he is definately protecting her!

I just thought that DD asked Tralawney to stay in Hogwarts because he was sort of cheering her up. But yes, I do think she is an important character in the series.
