Harry becoming an Auror

Postby Nothlit » Friday 27 June 2003 1:39:16am

During today's live webcast, JKR read from OotP from the part where Harry gets career advice in McGonagall's office, and Umbridge tries to say that he will never be allowed to become an Auror. JKR said this, shortly before the event: "There's a teeny hint of what's coming in book six from the reading I'm doing today."

Any guesses as to what this hint might be? I personally think it may be when McGonagall says that she will personally tutor Harry in Transfiguration and Potions so that his grades will be high enough to get the N.E.W.T.s that he needs. Maybe we'll see more of that in the next two books. Any other thoughts?

I got that sense when I read that passage also. I also think that Harry will ace all his O.W.Ls due to all the messiness that happened during the school year.

Harry will certainly need Auror's skills if he is to take out Voldemort.

Not an exciting way to end the series but it wouldn't be unreasonable for Harry to play quidditch for England besides from possibly becoming an auror.

*stupid question* is his lifelong ban of quidditch still in effect since umbridge left?

Harry the Auror

Postby highsorcerer » Friday 27 June 2003 7:39:39am

I think all of Umbridge's and the MoM decrees will be nullified. So Harry will be restored to the Quidditch team, the Quibbler can be read without explusion, school clubs and teams can be formed (such as the D.A.)... but there might be a slight problem with one thing.

Harry's Hogsmead permission form was signed by Sirius Black. Unfortunately, Sirius's death means he can no longer be considered to be his legal guardian. Harry will have to rely on the OotP to put the pressure on the Dursleys to sign it.

It *does* seem like McGonagall has committed herself to making Harry her protege'. Harry's main trouble will be potions, but there are hints he did well, particularly with the question on polyjuice potions and the lack of pressure he felt with an objective tester instead of Snape.

Of course Harry did well on Potions ! Snape does not like him, but he is a GREAT teacher  , so all his students will pass fingers-in-the-nose, the OWL's examinators being less demanding than Snape.

To come back to JKR's hint, McGonagall is indeed bound to help Harry achieve Outstanding NEWTS, cause she is not the kind to overlook such a promise. However, I do think that Harry is quite good, as hinted several times in the books (like, Hermione reading his essay and finding nothing wrong). But sure, with Quidditch (hopefully), fighting Voldie and such, he might need a hand ...

Assuming the permission slip has to be re-signed every year.

I don't know that Snape is a great teacher . . . I mean, he's so partial, and he spends most of the time picking on Harry and co. rather than teaching them. However, Harry hates Snape so much that he (Harry) may just decide to pass Potions with flying colors just to spite him (Snape).

Anyway, back to the topic. I don't think Harry will become an auror in the next two books- doesn't he have to wait until he graduates from Hogwarts to become an Auror? Like, he has to come of age or something, I guess. Maybe since Voldemort's back, they'll change around some of the rules. Whether or not Harry becomes Auror, though, I'm pretty certain that McGonagall's going to coach him, or at least help him along somehow, since she's in the Order too, I think. Right? Right.

i got the impression from the scene when tonks was talking about becoming an auror that you half to go through some sort of auror school or something...she talked about all these subjects that ive never heard of Hogwarts having.

i think harry studying (with the help of McGonangall) to be an auror is definitely possible. in the end, he's got to be the ultimate auror if hes going to defeat Voldemort......if.....

Harry an Auror?

Postby highsorcerer » Saturday 28 June 2003 3:05:21am

You know what. Harry is already an Auror. He's been catching dark wizards since he was 11 years old (when he defeated Quirrell / Voldemort). The character and aptitude tests will be a breeze for him. Testing how he reacts under pressure? Done it, several times. High skills in personal defense? Been there, done that. Determination and perseverance? No problem.

That's true . . . but you know, he'll have to go through all the tests, probably, assuming that there are tests to become aurors, which there should be. Then again, as I've said before, since Voldie's back, the MoM will probably change the rules a bit . . .

But...but...i thought all the 7 books are abt Harry's life at hogwarts...so he cant really have a career unless J.K decides to write more...

Who knows...maybe Harry end up dead at the end of bk 7?
