i think dumbledore did want to die because he could have defended himself even without a wand, because some great wizards can use spells without a wand.

Since when can wizards use spells w.out wands???

Wouldn't that kind of kill the point in having a wand?

The spell doesn't come from a wand, it is merely used as a focusing tool. Hence spells can be perfromed without wands, however they are usually weaker and lack direction e.g.

Harry at the start of OotP when he and his cousin are being attacked by dementors, he makes his wand light up so that he can find it in the dark.

Harry in the PS, makes the glass disappear in the reptile house without a wand and this is through focusing his anger.

Ah, its not really a spell though as much as it is rage imo, its not like someone can do the Avara kedavara without a wand

i agree darksoul... he also blows up his aunt in POA, makes his hair grow overnight, jumps on top of a roof and neville bounces when he's dropped out of a window. it seems as if in extreme circumstances wizards CAN do magic without a wand.
also, animagi can't use wands when they have transformed. how do they get back to their human form if they can't use magic without a wand?
i think a wand might focus the magic more, and make it more powerful. if a wand was all it took to make magic any muggle could get a wand a be a wizard.

Isn't there an interview with J.K where she explains about magic with out wands? I think she stated that wizrds can do limited unfocused magic without there wands. I'll have to find the interview.

First of all, I don't think they can do spells without a wand.

I think they can do magic.
