The choice of leaving the school, without the knowledge of whether there would be another school year, is on a whim. Although Harry, is an intelligent and strong wizard with great friends and great love, he's still young and inexperienced.

He's letting his emotions guide him, and although emotions are not necessairly a bad thing, he has to calculate and dissect the situation before he decides to go after Voldemort.

Dropping his education for a pursuit that at this time, he does not know will end is just a typical teen decision.

They don't even know for sure if Hogwarts will re-open, tho, right? Harry knows that he has to find and destroy the horcruxes to destroy LV, and he knows that only he can do that, so he's gonna go after them. I think the order will support his decision.....maybe he'll tell them about the prophecy if necessary, too?

No, I don't think HP will tell the order about the prophecy. Anyone who knows the contents of it is in danger, and HP wouldn't willingly/knowingly put others in danger. And we saw at the end of HBP that even though DD is dead, he wouldn't tell McGonagall about the horcruxes because DD told him not to tell anyone about it. I think in general, the things HP learned in the privacy of Dd's office he will continue to keep to himself until after the fact.

Even though HP isn't going back to Hogwarts, I imagine the school will remain open -- the reason I think this is because I'm sure JKR plans for HP to be able to talk to DD via the painting in the headmasters office.

If I were HP. I'd tuck that picture under my arm and take it with me everywhere!

bwahahahahahaha...that's funny Froggs. Can you see it...HP zooming off on his broom, one arm clutching the broom, the other arm clutching DD's picture, chit-chatting away.

Will he have to find this out the hard way? Or can his friends convince him?

Hey, carsten!

Okay, I think the big difference is that Harry is doing his out of nobility and love, while Voldemort didn't need or want friends. I agree with you that Harry's mistaken, and I think it's quite obvious he'll realize this, because they wouldn't get rid of all the main characters but him and Voldemort for the last book, but he's pushing his friends away for their own safety. Plus, he knows that it won't be them who will be able to kill Voldemort, so he's probably thinking that if they were with him, they'd be in harm's way needlessly. Misguided, but different than Voldemort.
