I forget in which book it is but this teacher is refered to as "she" at some point.

I think that Crookshanks is probably part kneazle - his reaction towards scabbers suggested that, whilst also his appearence.
It would be too obvious for him to be an animagi, as we have now seen it in sirius, rita skeeter and mcgonagall.

Well i hope it will make you happy to know this... because the other day i went into Jk Rowlings Official Fan Site and read some of the rumors.. and one said that they thougt Crookshanks were an animagi, probably Lilly.. well Jk denied it and said that if you want to know what specis he were we had to read Fantastic Beasts And Were To Find Them.. I did and i found out that Kneazle were the only thing that fited to the description of a cat beside the part that they have Big ears and a Lion tail. But it can be Cross-Breed with ordinary cats, and get about 8 kittens at each birth, and when you do that i guess they loses the lion tail and gets an ordinary tail and the ears wont be that big. its agressiv but only to "bad" beings and if you ever get lost the Kneazle will find you and then the right way back home.
So he is part Kneazle and part cat.
