Have you ever wondered..?

Postby Fweegal » Thursday 21 July 2005 11:24:07am

A thread for people to post things that they've always wondered about in the HP series.

-Firstly, if Harry is safe at home in Privet Drive, why wasn't he home schooled by a wizard? :D
-How does Hogwarts stay afloat financially?
-Did DD live at Hogwarts?
-What did the Potters and other Order members do for a living before being killed/imprisoned/occassionally turning into a werewolf?
-Where does the Potter fortune come from? Were the Potters an old wizarding family?
-Do any of the other founders of Hogwarts have living descendents?
-Who are the other members of the Board of Governors, apart from Lucius Malfoy?
-Is Petunia a Squib?

I don't think Petunia is a Squib - I'm sure some where it's mentioned that his mum is from a non wizarding family (Snape calls her a mudblood in his memory in OOTP)
I think Harry wasn't schooled at home as DD wanted him to have as normal a life as possible for a wizard (also why he wasn't adopted by a wizarding family)

Maybe i'm wrong but isnt it the case that Petunia cant be a squib because her parents werent magical; for her to be a squib she must have muggle parents and for her to be non-magical herself. Lily was muggle born, but i dont think that that would make her siblings squibs?

A squib is some-one born to a wizarding family but that has no magical powers (eg. Filch)
A mudblood is a wizard with muggle parents.
So Harry's grandparents (on Lilly's side) are muggles, and so is his aunt.

Well these remain unanswered..

-How does Hogwarts stay afloat financially?

-Did DD live at Hogwarts?
As much as I would like to picture him on holiday...

-What did the Potters and other Order members do for a living before being killed/imprisoned/occassionally turning into a werewolf?

-Where does the Potter fortune come from? Were the Potters an old wizarding family?

-Do any of the other founders of Hogwarts have living descendents?
I think DD might have had a Grffindo connection. I wonder does Harry?

-Who are the other members of the Board of Governors, apart from Lucius Malfoy?
I really would like to know. Presumably they are all very important wizards and witches.

I think a bunch of those questions are going to be answered when Harry journies to Godric's Hollow. As far as Hogwarts goes, perhaps the founders left plenty of money for the school to be run forever, or who knows, maybe Wizards pay taxes?

I guess they must pay taxes. I mean the Ministry isn't financed by hot air!

i thought the students had to pay to go. i don't know why but i thought i read somewhere that there was help available for those who couldn't afford it (probably like the weasleys). that could have been a theory though...
still, in SS/PS, dursley says to hagrid that he "wont pay" for harry to go to school. i'm pretty sure there must be some type of tuition. if that is the case and someone paid for tr/lv to go...wouldn't he owe them something somehow?

*wow that might not have made any sense. very sorry...*

that makes sense...and that's what I'd thought too. Like you mentioned, in SS/PS Dursley is adamant that he won't pay to send Harry to this school and in HBP DD tells Tom Riddle that help is available for those who need it. I felt for sure this implies that there is some sort of tuition.

I thought it meant school supplies, but you are right, it could apply to tuition as well.

I don't think there is...
For one, Harry doesn't pay it, and the Weasley's surely wouldn't be able ot pay for all their kids to attend?
