a few Rowling notes

Postby Athena Appleton » Monday 24 May 2004 4:56:16pm

I wasn't for sure where to put this, but to clarify a few things, taken from the Rowling website.

1. Voldemort is not a cuddly animal, and Voldemort will not turn good. Stop trying.

2. Lily was not a former Death Eater, or anything of the like.

3. James, Lily and Sirius are all dead. For real.

4. Voldemort is indeed the last heir of Slytherin (meaning Lily and Harry aren't his children/grandchildren).

5. James is definately Harry's dad (I can't believe there are actually people out there who think that either Dumbledore or Voldemort is Harry's dad).

6. Draco isn't going to have a romance with a nice girl (this was taken from the World Book Day chat). Tom Felton is cute. Draco Malfoy is not.

Click on the paperclips. Click on the letter labelled "books". CLick on FAQ on the left-hand side of the paper. Vote! Mark Evans for president!

I think that the fact that JKR is willing to answer the question, in itself tells us Mark Evans won't be a major character in the next books. Whay would she give away the story? However, that doesn't neccesarily(sp) mean that he won't play at least a small role.

I think she'll have to at least figure out a way to explain away a character named Mark Evans, which will affect the story quite a bit (think: Harry thinks he's found a relative, but he hasn't... that story unfolds)

Just realized this

Wouldn't harry have wondered himself if mark evans was related to him, at some point he must have known petunia's maiden name, therefore he would know his moms. So it wouldn't be like he never knew his mothers maiden name, unless the dursleys kept that from him. I guess that is a possibility, because Petunia never does talk about her parents, because they "like lily the best". But i would still think that at some point Harry knew that his Mom's name was Evans, and he possibly talked to this kid and asked if he was in any way related to the potters.

Harry definitely knows his mum was Lily Evans - he saw his dad call her Evans in Snape's pensieve memory.

I think Untouchable was talking about the possibility of Harry knowing his mom's maiden name before OotP.

Since Harry has always assumed that he has no other living relatives other than the Dursleys, I think that even if he knew that his mother's maiden name was Evans, it wouldn't have occurred to him that Mark could be a relative. Not only that, but Evans, in Harry's real-life world, is a relatively common name (no pun intended), but in the context of a J.K. Rowling story, and since we know that she doesn't just have those little coincindences, it's not that odd that Harry would know someone he wasn't related to who shared Petunia and Lily's maiden name.

That said, I don't think Harry knew before the pensieve, and I really almost would think that it would be something he wouldn't think much about afterwards (he was so preoccupied with all the mess with his dad and Snape, I think he could have completely skimmed over hearing his mom's maiden name)

I'm pretty sure Harry didn't know Lily's maiden name before OotP because he sees his dad writing "LE" in a heart or something on his DADA exam paper but doesn't know what it stands for. If he knew she was Evans it would be obvious to him what LE meant.

*pats harrylover on the head* that's right... you just keep telling yourself that...

I've seen the theories that Voldemort was really Harry's dad (linked with a lot of other completely baseless theories like Lily was a Death Eater, or that's why Voldemort "didn't want to kill her")... never saw the Dumbledore thing, though... anyway, water under the bridge now. Rowling seemed offended that people out there thought Lily had this dark past.

Yes, but his death did serve some useful purposes. First of all, it taught Harry that he doesn't know everything, and to trust in people who are more informed than he (if he had done that, Sirius would still be alive.) It reminded Dumbldore of human nature that you can't keep someone locked away when that person has the kind of personality that Sirius had. As a result of Sirius's death, Harry found out all that useful information at the end of Order of the Phoenix.

But if you really want to believe he's not dead, go ahead... I just wouldn't get my hopes up if I were you. :-)
