The Howler - a spinoff

Postby Athena Appleton » Sunday 21 March 2004 7:29:57am

I promise, this propounds on a different theory entirely, so I didn't put it in the REMEMBER MY LAST PETUNIA thread... if someone wants to move it, go ahead, but there's so much else and so much more background in this, it could easily be a theory all on its own, only coming to a head with the howler.

For those who are just joining us , Petunia gets a howler in OotP that says "REMEMBER MY LAST, PETUNIA" and I think the "last" referred to is a letter written by Dumbledore to Petunia after the third event of the Triwizard Tournament. I forgot who said it wasn't, and they referred to the first letter we know of that Dumbledore gave the Dursleys, the night Harry was dropped off at their house, and that McGonagall says that a letter wouldn't be able to explain it all. This is how I think things went down.............................. 8)

K, It's late, I'm sleepy, hyper, and not-that-smart when I'm sleepy and hyper at the same time, but I'll try to make a reasonable post...

The letter I was talking about wasn't the letter Dumbledore dropped off in P/SS. I don't think he stuck around afterwards, but really, I think Petunia has been in some contact with the wizarding world before P/SS, and a lot more since then. The first chapter is told through Vernon's point of view. I don't think he had any communication with the wizarding world, and I don't think he knew she had been keeping up with it...

But this propounds on my whole theory that, if I'm wrong, I'm going to have to reread the books again to get a general idea of the basic storyline because it's SO in depth:

1. Petunia and Lily's parents were squibs, not muggles.
2. Petunia was jealous of Lily because she's a muggle/squib (I'm a bit confused about the actual name of what Petunia is... the squib daughter of squibs)
3. Petunia meets and marries Vernon, who would hate all things magical, so therefore, she pretends to hate (with good reason) all things magical. BTW, I don't think she likes magical things, just doesn't have the hatred Vernon does.
4. Petunia does keep up with her family secretly (because Vernon doesn't approve)
5. James and Lily die, Voldy flees, Harry needs a home. Dumbledore is able to pawn him off with only a letter, because he knows Petunia's at least kept up with things a little bit, and has the general background.
6. Dumbledore and Petunia keep up a secret (to everyone else, including Harry) corrospondance for the next ten years, but it's been a minimal corrospondance. You know, maybe once a year, Dumbledore would send an owl to her to say "I want to find out how Harry is, make sure you're keeping him safe, remind you of what you have to do."
7. Harry goes off to Hogwarts, first year. Corrospondance ceases, until the very beginning of Chamber of Secrets, when Dumbledore sends an owl to the Dursleys over the flying car mishap.
8. Next corrospondance probably happens around the time of Sirius's escape (keep in mind, Vernon has only received the original Hogwarts letter and the note home to the family in CoS).
9. Harry blows up Aunt Bulldog, more magical folk come into the picture to fix her, the Dursleys say they want Harry to stay at Hogwarts til next summer. I think Dumbledore probably tells Petunia at some point in the year what all is going on with Sirius, or else I think that was one of his original corrospondances with her.
10. Harry goes BACK to Privet Drive, diets with Fatty and Family, the Weasleys blow up the living room and ton-tongue Dudley. Harry goes off to have a great time at the World Cup. I think Petunia probably gets a note regarding the Death Mark and what happened after the World Cup.
11. They get to Hogwarts, fourth year. Weird thing happens. Harry is chosen as the fourth contestant in the Tri-Wizard tournament. Petunia probably gets a letter, since this is weird, and probably Dumbledore and Sirius both realize the potential danger.
12. Harry gets through the first two tasks, no problemo, the Dursleys don't ask and don't care. The Dursleys get invited to and turn down the third event.
13. Crazy stuff happens the night of the third task. Petunia gets a letter (the letter I think is Dumbledore's "last" from the howler) saying basically that Harry just went through this major MAJOR ordeal, saw a fellow-student killed, saw the death eaters, saw Voldy come back to life. Voldy's out and about, the Durlsey's need to keep a tighter reign on Harry now that the main enemy is back. Harry, the Dursleys, and really the rest of mankind is in grave danger, and it's up to Vernon and Petunia to keep Harry extra-safe.

According to my theory, Petunia exchanges notes (and I'm not talking about long sweet detailed epistles, mostly just Dumbledore checking up on her and Harry, and her pert replies) with Dumbledore a number of times in the 15 years we've seen so far. Vernon has known about only about five of them (the letter when Harry was left, the original Hogwarts letter, the letter telling them about the flying car incident, the letter inviting them to the third task, and the howler).

I've checked and double-checked, and there's really no reason my theory can't work, I don't think... we see of Petunia what Vernon or Harry sees of Petunia, but then we thought Moody was the good teacher in book 4, we thought Sirius was the bad guy in book 3, because the story is only told through Harry's eyes... I think the only reason Petunia acts like she HATES (instead of just dislikes) the wizarding race is because she knows Vernon wouldn't stand for it.

And now, it's much more late (that took longer to type than I thought it would!!!) and I'm even more sleepy, but not as hyper, so it's almost time for the resident crazy person to go night-night.

Wow Athena... This a very well explained theory! As you say, it could be very very true. Those two events (Petunia talking about Azkaban and the howler) seem to be th great support to this thoery... I'm almost forced to believe you're right!!!

I think I'll reread all the pages Petunia appears to see what supports and what doesn't!

(I don't know if this is related to the topic, but did you notice that McGonagall face is twice or three times compared to Petunia's, in OotP?)

I had noticed that, but I hadn't put a lot of thought into it...

Since all the similarities between McGonagall and Petunia are facial expressions only (the tight lip, etc.), and those expressions are very telling of a similar personality trait, I think that's all it is, really... Like, that McGonagall and Petunia are both very stern, strict, and perfectionists.

See, what stinks about my howler theory is that if one part of it is wrong, it's all wrong... but I think I've actually got all my bases covered... :-) doublecheck me, though!

The theory seems to be pretty water tight, and, incidentally, the fact that Petunia might be a Squib (or whatever) is irrellevant, for this theory to work, so, Good job!

I just can't wait until we find more about Petunia's past and what exactly she is.

I think Mark Evans will HAVE to show up (just does NOT seem like J.K. Rowling to have a random character with the same last name as Lily's maiden name... no way) He'll be eleven this year (old enough to attend Hogwarts........) we'll see

Thats an interesting theory. I never did think anything of the sort, although I did think that DD and Petunia had been in corrospondence a couple of other times between the 5 letters that Vernon knows about. interesting theory.

im sorry to possibly bust a hole in your theory but u seem to have forgotten petunias responce to when she found out voldy was back

"Back?" whispered aunt petunia. she was starring at him like she had never seen him before.

if dumbledore had sent petunia a letter about what harry saw why would she acted so scared and surprised? and if they had a correspondance why didnt dumbledore tell her about voldemorts return?[/quote]

Really that is genius. She seems to know quite a bit about the Wizarding World, the death eaters

Remember when she clasped her hand on mouth when Harry said Dementors, then when Vernon said something like "what you know about these things" then she replied "ah....he-he mentioned them once, long ago"
how could a muggle really compremend what a dementor is unless you can see them

I have to disagree with a couple of things sorry.
4. Petunia does keep up with her family secretly (because Vernon doesn't approve)

In the first book Vernon is very nervous about asking Petunia about her sister and the boy. He is afraid that she will get upset.

If DD and Petunia have corresponded during Harry's formative years then why did she work so hard to keep the letters from him. She must have known that he would eventually go to Hogwarts. Now I know that it was Vernon who got nuts about it but she was right there with him trying to keep Harry from all of this.

And then there is Enchanter's point about Petunia's shock upon finding out that Voldemort is back.

ahhh... hmmm... i'll think about it and get back to ya.

He thinks she would. Doesn't mean she would have. If she were realistically trying to convince him she hates all things magical, then he would naturally assume it would upset her if he mentioned it. But it's all depending on the fact that it's not her point of view, or the point of view of some omniscient being, it's the point of view of Vernon, who, according to my theory, believes she hates all things magical. BTW, like I said, I don't think she likes all things magical, by any means. Just don't think she hates it and has turned her back on it the way Vernon (and Harry) think she has.

If DD and Petunia have corresponded during Harry's formative years then why did she work so hard to keep the letters from him. She must have known that he would eventually go to Hogwarts. Now I know that it was Vernon who got nuts about it but she was right there with him trying to keep Harry from all of this.

To tell you the truth, I really think Petunia hoped (even though she had evidence to show otherwise) that Harry would not turn out to be the chosen one, and would not turn out to be magical at all. Because, I think Petunia really is more worried about the appearance of things than just about anything else, and it would bother her to have a wizard nephew living with her. And I think that she possibly would have had some trepidation regarding Vernon's reaction if she were to say "We just need to give in and let Harry go to Hogwarts. Know what I mean, Vern?" I don't think Petunia's living a lie every day... I think she has some pretty serious resentments about the magical world. I think she has some definate self-image and self-esteem issues to the point of she wants everyone to think everything is normal and going along swimmingly.

I think its a really great idea and maybe possible but theres a few things that I think are sketchy. Harry is mistreated his entire life up until the first book when Vernon and Petunia decide to move him from the cupboard to a bedroom. He is still mistreated but not as badly. If Petunia had contact with wizards that would mean that she would know wizards (who all thought of Harry as a hero) could be watching her and how she treats Harry for all of the first 15 years (and after of course). I don't think she'd risk a fury of angry wizards swooping down on her for mistreatment of "The Boy Who Lived", it would disrupt her quiet "normal" life.

One other thing, when Harry recieves his first Hogwarts letter it says "Petunia took it {the letter} curiously". If Petunia was in contact with wizards, especially Dumbledore she would know have known straight off who was writing to Harry or she would have had a darn good guess and wouldn't look "curious" she'd look angry, or frightened. Not onlt that but she's clearly shocked after reading the letter. You could say she was acting, but there really isn't any evidence for that.
