Godric Gryffindor and Salazar Slytherin

Postby hagrid_fang » Thursday 18 March 2004 12:08:17am

i was re-reading chamber of secrets the other day, and a thought occured to me, slytherin left the school because of some dispute with the other founders... what actually happened when he left? i'm wondering if maybe there was some sort of duel between these two which has made voldie and harry's fate somehow parallel to theirs? if you get my drift that is.
Just curious as to what some others would maybe think about this?

That is kind of what I want to know in the
"A Gryffindor Secret" thread.

I have a strong suspition that the battle between Godric and Salazar is related to the battle between Harry and Voldemort.

Hmmm... I dunno if it was an actual battle, maybe just an disagreement and Salazar got all mad and left, like a spoiled kid who has to have things his way. Though it is pretty ironic... if Harry turns out to be Gryfindor's heir, and Voldemort is the heir of Slytherin... man, I hope JKR puts a buttload of backstory in the next two books! :-?

If I'm remembering correctly, Slytherin left because he only wanted purebloods at Hogwarts.

I don't think there was some kind of knock-down drag-out battle or anything. I also don't think he was all that evil. Wait, he did have that little basilisk that went around petrifying and killing all the muggleborns. nevermind! :D

I wonder if after he left, Slytherin started his own secret school.

haha, maybe Slytherin helped start Durmstrang, too... they do teach dark arts and are a more slytheriny school than Hogwarts...

Somethin else about Godric Gryffindor and Salazar Slytherin: they were best friends before whatever happened to cause problems between them. Remember the Sorting Hat's song in OotP, it asks if ever there were such friends as Gryffindor and Slytherin...

wonder what happened????

I think it was just that they disagreed about the type of students they thought should be allowed to enter into the school. Slytherin was particular abou the students being pure-blood and he and Gryffindor probably had countless arguments about it until one day Slytherin decided he'd had enough.

I don't think it was a mere disagreement, I dunno it just seems to me that Salazar would be pretty stubborn (determination is a quality he desires in his students) I can't see him going o.k godric, you win. I'll give up.

If you think of voldy as a parallel to salazar.... I just think it would have be something major that happened for him to just leave.

I am also thinking along those lines.
Something beside the well known argument of students happened between them.
This would set up the future struggles with voldie the heir of Slytherin and Harry whom I believe is the heir of Gryffindor
*(though I am undecided as to wether he became heir through his mother or his father)

I think the general consensus among people who believe Harry is the heir to Gryffindor think it was through James... I've heard reasons of it... however, my mind isn't thinking too clearly right now, and I can't for the life of me remember what those reasons are... I'll look it up in a little bit when things are settled down and post it. :-)

A lot of people think Harry is the hier of Godric, but wouldn't that be a little, well you know, cliche. I dont think JK would ever write something that, well, cheap. If it was someone competely obscure, like Malfoy and Seamus, that would be quite the twist.

The sorting hat said that there were never any friends like Slytherine and Gyffandor, so thats a huge fact contredicting this theory, but I don't think that there isn't any connection between the founders and the students at hogwarts

double negatives confuse me: you think there is or isn't a link between the founders and current students.

as far as Rowling writing anything "clichè" or "cheap"... I still can't help rolling my eyes when I get to the part in the book or movie of Sorcerer's Stone when Dumbledore tells Harry that his mother's love saved him. gag, gag, gag...

She doesn't usually just throw in random twists without leaving a LOT of trails for us to notice later (hardly ever, I notice the trails for what they are until after I know the outcome).

Personally I lean toward Harry being descended from both Godric and Salazaar. Too many things allign him with one or the other ( green eyes, Parslemouth, born in Godric's Hollow, pulls Gryfindor's sword from the hat, and others too numerous to remember off the top of my head)
I think that is why Voldemort chose Harry instead of Neville. Harry is a sort of potential double threat. 8)

Yes, but didn't Harry only become a Parselmouth because of Voldemort accidentally transfering powers to him.

yes, Harry became a parselmouth because Voldy accidently transferred some of his powers and talents over to Harry a long time ago.

There are two running themes about Harry's eyes, and I think one of them is a red herring. One running theme is that Harry's eyes are green, and Slytherin and all things evil are green. The other is that Harry's eyes are just like Lily's. I think the latter is the actual clue, really.

In my opinion, if Harry's eye color were a major major hint to something big, like his being related to Voldemort, then they would have made Dan Radcliffe wear green contacts for the movies. Rowling has a lot of input into these films, and if that's a major septology clue, I don't think she'd just allow them to drop it and have a kid with very vivid blue eyes play the part.

So I think the color of Harry's eyes is irrelevant, except to further show the similarity between Lily's eyes and Harry's eyes.
