Sapped of powers?

Postby AccioNiffler » Sunday 8 April 2007 7:20:07pm

So I was re-reading the Half Blood Prince and I came across a passage that I never payed much attention to before. But now that this is the *insert number here because I've lost count* time that I have read the book, and now that I'm thinking about Deathly Hallows a lot, this passage seemed like it might be important.

US Edition, page 262, Dumbledore and Harry's conversation after their second lesson and trip into the pensieve.

"But she could do magic!" said Harry impatiently. "She could have got food and everything for herself by magic, couldn't she?"
"Ah," said Dumbledore, "perhaps she could. But it is my belief-- I am guessing again, but I am sure that I am right-- that when her husband abandoned her, Merope stopped using magic. I do not think that she wanted to be a witch any longer. Of course, it is also possible that her unrequited love and the attendant despair sapped her of her powers; that can happen. In any case, as you are about to see, Merope refused to raise her wand even to save her own life."

So do any of you think that the part about being sapped of your powers could possibly be foreshadowing? If someone really close to Harry were to die (Ron, Hermione, maybe even Ginny...?) that he might be sapped of his powers? *Now I'm going to go out on a theory limb here* I personally believe that Voldemort only strengthened the connection between him and Harry by using Harry's blood to come back. That being said, I also believe that if Harry dies, Voldemort dies and vice versa. So if that is the case, if something so bad were to happen to Harry that he lost his powers, would it affect Voldemort too? Could that relate to the lack of wands on the cover of book 7?

I know I'm going out there a little bit, but what do you guys think?

Well of couse it would affect LV, but in that way,.... good question. I personally think that Harry's blood was only used for the spell, it won't have really anything else to do with, if so, then what would happen if Wormtail died?

As for Harry's powers being sucked out,... it's hard to say because for one, Harry's been though enough termoil already, that mean's that he's either near a breaking point or that's made him stronge, or both. But his anger always seemed to strengthen him,(not thinking clearly though) so I don't really think that his powers will be sucked out of him. merope on the other hand, is kinda weak so if her's were sucked out, no surprise.

Exactly, Merope had never experienced loss before. Harry however has lost his parents, Sirius, and Dumbledore and he still has his powers so Im pretty sure he's strong enough to keep them even if someone like ron or hermione died.

Well, Merope did lose plenty, but she didn't have much to begin with. She seemed fairly unstable.... :-?

Yes unstable is a good way of putting it..
Anyway back to the theory..
Could that relate to the lack of wands on the cover of book 7?

I think the lack of wands might have something to do with the fact that in GoF they attempted that and it didn't turn out so well because their wands are connected, so are pretty much useless at casting spells against each other.

It is possible the blood magically bound LV and Harry together in some way, It seems like LV almost stole life from Harry through the blood. But I think its a bit too romantic to think that one would die when the other was killed.

Well we definitely know that it can happen, Merope isn't the only example of it.

For exhibit two, we have Tonks in the sixth book.
