Ok, another thing that has been bothering me since i started re-reading the books is:

Why is it that Dobby found harry so fast when I thought dumbledore had used some old magic to make sure no one found him?

He didn't use old magic to make sure no one found Harry, just to make sure Voldemort couldn't hurt him. Apparently, anyone and anything else can hurt him, though...

The charm to keep anyone from finding you has only been used in two instances that we know of: the Potters used it when they were hiding from Voldemort when Harry was a baby, and the Order of the Phoenix uses it to protect their headquarters. I think it's also possible that that charm is used on the Leaky Cauldron, even though I admit I have no real evidence of this, outside of the fact that no Muggles seem to realize the place exists on the Muggle side of the street.

I think that Voldy said in GoF that Dumbledore had invoked some old magic with regards to Harry staying with the Dursley's and even he couldn't get to him there. This implies that he knows where Harry is staying but knows its a route that won't lead him anywhere. If he just wanted to pop in and chat to Harry with no intent of malice, as Dobby wanted to, I'm fairly sure he could.

yeah... what Eol seems to be describing is more like the fidelus charm, which I don't think is quite what Dumbledore did to protect Harry. If that were the case, he could have put Harry in a happier home environment and made himself the secret-keeper.

I don't know how the charm that Lily/Dumbledore/Petunia put on Harry actually protected him, just that it did.

I include Petunia in there because the charm apparently had three parts. Lily sacrificing her life for Harry, Dumbledore using that sacrifice to make Harry untouchable as long as he considered "home" to be a place where his blood relatives live, and Petunia closed the deal when she agreed to take Harry.

If he considers home to be where blood relatives are and Voldemort is bolder now because he has Lily`s blood protection in him then Voldemort might attack Hogwarts. Especially since he has regained followers

But I don't think Voldemort really has that protection... he can touch Harry, and that's because they used Harry's blood in the resurrection, but he doesn't have any special protection himself... I don't think...

I think there is ALOT more to learn from Dobby. I have a suspicion that he was once the Potter's servant. Yes a little over the top, but it would explain a lot of things. We know that house elf's are not allowed to go anywheres without their masters permission, so how was it that he went to Harry. Some could argue that Malfoy sent him there to make Harry not to come to school cause Harry would figure somthing out, but that wouldn't make sense because Harry going to Hogwarts would put him in danger. I think Dobby was found by the Malfoy's (or Voldemort gave Dobby to the Malfoy's) and he's been living there ever since. He heard what Malfoy was plotting and told the only person he could. The Dursley's wouldn't keep Dobby becuase, well you know why. Also when Dobby preformed that spell in the Dursley's house, no one would think it to be him becuase no other wizard lives at the Dursley's house, (its took me up till today to finally work that out, lol.) I think we are going to learn a lot more about Dobby in the next book.

Exactly my opinion! And I would like to add what was mentioned before in the thread about house-elves: they could be the ones to make the difference in the upcoming war.
