Updating member lists?

Postby Augusta Longbottom » Sunday 24 July 2005 8:06:26pm

Hi Paul, this is not important, but just something to think about once things ever slow down.

Does your software show you when was the last time a member posted in a list view -- I mean, does it generate a type of list showing when each person last posted? The reason I ask is because many members are no longer active, (Hufflepuff has exactly 3 active members, but perhaps another 3 or so that pop in every 3 months or so). I am wondering if there is a way to mark on the member lists and usergroup lists members who are inactive...members that haven't posted in say 9 months or so. I think the lists as they are now are so far off.

AND, could it weed out those who are clearly not users any more...like the people who have 5 posts and they joined in 2002.

I know all the houses are slow lately, but when you look at the usergroup lists it doesn't begin to show just how few members each house has. I admit, I would be sad to realize we only had 5 or 6 members left in our house, but I suspect that's the case.

Again, this is nothing important especially since it's busy around here right now, but something to think about for the future if your software has the capability of doing some search like this.

It's not something that the board software can do directly, but I wrote a couple of mini-programs a while ago which I may be able to combine in some way (if I can find them on my PC). One of them gave the number of members per House and another gave the number of members who had posted since a particular date (if I can remember correctly). If you can give me a couple of weeks or so, I'll try to sort something out to get the info together. I'm not too keen on totally deleting inactive members as sometimes someone may come back after a couple of years or more absence. Admittedly this is rare, particularly for people who have never posted. It's also kind-of nice to see a large number of members on the index page. :) Maybe once we get to 2,000 or more I'll possibly start some pruning of definite non-active accounts (I may be able to do this by going into the database and who never used their email activation thingy).

Good point Paul! That sounds like a better plan, wait till the numbers are way up there, then weed out the names you know for sure are no longer with us.

I wasn't *trying* to create more work for you anyway...had just been thinking that your programs might already do something along those lines. :D
