Little Yellow Bells...

Postby Holly Golightly » Saturday 28 June 2003 4:07:49pm

Okies, I know that this isnt' a big problem, but it's kinda driving me nuts!!!

Usually when you post something new, the thread comes up with the little yellow bell, right, to show that there is a new post... :D

But lately, everytime I post somewhere, either the bell just stays white, or goes from being yellow before to being white now that I have posted there...

Did I accidentally click on something to make it do this??? If so, and someone knows how to change it back, please please please tell me, because, honestly, it's driving me insane!!!

Thanks, Holly... :o <this is what I look like insane!!! hehehe

err...no

the 'little yellow bell' as you call it means there are posts in that thread that you havent read and if the bell stays white or goes white it means you have read/seen the whole thread

unless ive got confused and these little yellow bells are something else.....thats the only thing i can see that you can mean.....

Yeah, they are what I mean, but they ahve always come up yellow after I have posted in a thread... and now they don't...

And when I log in, there were always yellow on the topics that had new posts, now it doesnt' do that anymore... only new ones that are added after I log in... just not mine!!!

Soooo confused!!! :???:

I have the same problem as you, Holly. Nowadays, when I first came into the forum, I'll see these yellow bells on various topics signalling that there are new posts that i haven't read, but once I start to post something on one thread, all the yellow bells disappear and turns white instead, even though I haven't read all the new posts in the various forums. It drives me nuts too, since after the bells returns to being white in colour, I have to check through every thread in every forum just to make sure I haven't missed a new post since, with no yellow bells signalling if they're read or unread, I don't know if I've read through them before or not.

Is is my computer? Or is it the forum...?

The bells still work for me, but an another phpBB forum (like this one) I had the same problem as you did. Luckily that forum got moved to another server and the problems stopped after that. So I can't really help you, sorry!

What browser are you using though? I use Opera now, and when I had that problem I was using IE. Not sure if it matters, but maybe it does.. : )

I think the yellow bells are working as they should but I'm not quite 100% sure yet, and I've only checked this in Opera too. There is more that I need to do to the forum in the next few days, so rather than major testing right now, I'll check things more after the adjustments. Meanwhile, I'm not sure if it'll help (or if you already do this), but if you try opening forums and threads in a new window (right click and open in new window (or in a new tab if using Opera, Netscape 7 or most Mozilla-based browsers)) it may help to preserve the yellow bells. :-)

the yellow bells sound to me as though they are working correctly.....

at the moment for me they are but sometimes they dont change colour at all and i have to log out to make them turn white

anyways, the yellow bells ought to turn white when you visit any thread they were marking (thats what happens on every other forum i visit)

a post is new up untill the time you visit the thread at which point the software assumes youve read all of that thread since you entered it and should mark it read, same goes for posting in the thread

but, anything that turns white while you look at it will still show up in a search for posts since your last visit... if you use that search (top right of the forums on the main page) the fact they turn white is useful cos then you can tell which threads you have read in that search (but you will get spoilers for the book 5 threads if you use that search)

NO... unfortunally, my little bells still aren't doing what I want them to di... (or more to the point, what they used to do!!!)

They do show up yellow on new threads that I havent' read, and they go white when I read them, but previously, after I posted in a thread, it woudl still be yellow (to signify my new post) and now it remains white... it's just kinda annoying because then in the index page, the main bell goes white too, and I dont' realise that here are more threads in there that I haven't read!!!

Anyways, dont' stress Paul! I do understand that this isnt'a major problem, and dont' expect you to have a solution instantly (if ever, if there even is one!!!) I just thought that I might haev clicked on something that made that happen, and that was my problem!!!

Anyways, it might just be because of using IE like someone suggested, but I'm wayyyyyyy too slack to change!

Well, thanks all! Hopefully my little bells will fix themselves up one day!!! hehehe!

Holly ;)

This happens to me sometimes. If it helps, I have IE 6.0. I don't worry about it though, I just check all the threads that have been posted in that day.
