Under 13 have to get Permission?

Postby Accio1 » Tuesday 15 July 2003 6:02:05am

What if I'm 12 and almost 13 in like 4 months, can't I not getting parent's permission? I mean surely I'm old enough to decide for myself now?

By the way I'm Accio, but my account haven't been activated yet.

The Members list will show everyone whether their account has been activated or not. The parents' permission thing is due to COPPA (Childrens Online Privacy Protection Act 1998). From what I've read, I believe that this site probably doesn't need to strictly adhere to this, as both the site owner (me) and the servers are in the UK, and COPPA is a US law. However, firstly I'm not 100% certain about that, and secondly, there is a possibility that at some stage I may move the site to servers in the USA. Therefore I feel its best to adhere to the COPPA rules, both for the protection of members, and to ensure that this site doesn't accidentally fall foul of any laws/guidelines. Therefore I'm sorry Accio, but I'm going to have to request that you either have your parents sign the COPPA permission agreement, or wait until you're 13 or above.
