'Harry Potter' actors in other movies

Postby Lizzy Bennet » Saturday 14 June 2003 2:58:01am

I *think* I can put this topic in this section. :)

I just saw "My House in Umbria" last night (I recorded it a few weeks ago and just got around to watching it  ) starring Maggie Smith a.k.a. "Professor McGonagall". Whoa! Different role for Maggie! :o

It was an interesting story, but I think maybe the book ties up more of the loose ends. Maggie, though I love her acting, I think wasn't the best person for the role . . . the man she tries to have a romantic affair with is so young it comes across as really bizarre and unrealistic. Still, she has great range, and certainly an eloquence which I find fascinating.

I also, many years ago, enjoyed Alan Rickman a.k.a. "Professor Snape" in "Sense and Sensibility" which also starred Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, and Kate Winslet. Alan has *such* a deep voice, and he *definitely* has a different 'look' about him in this movie! hehehe

Lastly, off the top of my head, I've seen Kenneth Branaugh a.k.a. "Professor Lockhart" in a good movie with his then-wife, Emma Thompson, called "Dead Again". A much different role than "Professor Lockhart" for sure. Of the two roles he played in that movie, I enjoyed him portraying Roman in the 1940s. He and Emma lit up the screen! :-)

Any HP actors you've seen in other non-HP movies and enjoyed? What do you think of them as actors on the whole? Hopefully, this thread won't get locked...if it gets moved, that's fine by me. :) Looking forward to seeing who you mention in other words!

Maggie Smith also appeared in the movies Clash of Titans, The Secret Garden, and The Divine Secrets of the YA YA Sisterhood, and if I'm not mistaken she played in Hook.

Alan Rickman is a pretty widley known actor. I think he is best known for playing the villan in Die hard but he has done some other interesting things. He played in Rasputin and Galaxy quest.

Richard Harris who is a fantastic actor has had parts in The Count of Monte Cristo and Gladiator.

Robbie Coltran has starred in mostly English comedies like Nuns on the run and The Pope Must Diet but tose movies he did where back in the 80's.

Everybody who lives on the upside of a rock will know who Warwick Davis is. He did everything from Gullivers Travels to Willow.

Arthur Weasly's character is played by an actor I'm not to familiar with. The only other thing I have ever seeb him in was Shakespeare in Love.

Thats all I can really think of.

yes gryffindor student, VERY harsh.
i have been guilty if speaking before i think before but now i have learnt my lesson. i think you should as well.

i havent seen many of the younger cast members in any films but i know that ron ( name escapes me) was in a film about farting? i never saw it i thnk it was for very young people.

also hagrid (name also escapes me) has been in james bond films hasn't he? i think.....as some one valentino. i think but then i might be way off the mark.

i LOVE madame hooch in the series My family (8:30 BBC1) it is So funny and she is really good.

most of the actors used in HP are really good and have very good careers. they are versatile and believeable in ost of the roles they play.

Must admit to being very surprised at you, G-S. Not a very kind way to treat a relatively new member who has contributed very constructive and interesting posts to the forum.

Anyway, back to the topic in question, Robbie Coltrane was well known here in England for the original UK version of Cracker where he played an investigative psychologist. Crime programs really aren't my type of thing (there's enough awful stuff going on out there in real life for me to want to watch more on TV) so I only ever saw about 2 or 3 episodes but for a crime drama it was quite good, and he played a very interesting character.

Kennenth Branagh was in an extremely good 2 part mini-series called Shackleton about the Antarctic expedition which ended up as an extreme struggle for survival. It was shown on UK terrestrial TV around Christmas 2001, a year before Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets and I didn't realise it was the same person until Shackleton, was repeated a few months ago - the difference in characters is so striking and he played them both brilliantly. Around the same time as the repeat showing of Shackleton the BBC showed him in a drama-documentary called Conspiracy which is also absolutely brilliant (in a calmly frightening kind of way). It's an unusual film which is based around the meeting of 20 January 1942 where senior German Nazi leaders discussed and decided on "The Final Solution" regarding the Jewish people.

Mark Williams who plays Arthur Weasley has been in the comedy program, The Fast Show - that particular program isn't really my type of thing but I think he did a really great job of playing Ron's Dad.

And Richard Harris was totally amazing and perfect as King Arthur (he even sang!) in the 1967 movie, Camelot.

Sorry to continue with it, but that was harsh gryffindor student, rather uneccesary i think :(
Anyways, Alan Rickman played the voice of God in Dogma which i thought was a wonderful role for him! he was very saracastic, and had a very dry humour which i enjoyed - it provided great contrast to his role in HP
Kenneth Branagh played the role of Iago in a film of the play Othello which i found quiet amusing. i think he played the role the well, however i'm not a fan of the play itself so i think i preferred him in HP.

John Cleese(Nearly Headless Nick) is a good actor. Recently seen as Q's assistant R in The World is Not Enough and then as Q in Die Another Day.

I just love Alan Rickman as an actor! :D

I really liked him as the sherriff of nottingham in Robin hood prince of thieves. Loved him in Dogma as well.
I find it really hard to think of as anything but Snape now though!

I loved Robbie coltrane in the Cracker series. I remember seeing him in several films when I was younger as well. One was called "nuns on the run" and the other was called "tutti frutti" I think.

What about the broomstick teacher. Can't remember her name in the film but she is played by Zoe Wannamaker. I watched her in a series called "love hurts" many years ago. Now she plays the mum in bbc sitcom "my family."

Harrys mum was also played by an actress called gereldine james (i think) and she was also in cracker as panhandle.

Just to clear Gryffindor Student's name, I think she said (and she's welcome to reinterate that here) that someone logged on to her account and used her name and she didn't post the insulting messages 13 June. :) Off-topic, I know, but I'd hate for someone to see her name and think she was being mean when it wasn't her!

Yeah, I worked that out by the date...G-S has been cleared everybody! Anyways, Arthur Weasley's actor is more commonly known as a comic from the sketch show "The Fast Show" with Paul Whitehouse (suits you sir!). And Zoe Wannamaker is a comic in "My Family".

Here is where I know the actors from:

Maggie Smith- She has done loads of films, the only one i can think of which isnt mentioned here is 'the little princess'

Mark Williams- He has just recently done a very good comedy called 'Anita and me' where he played a priest

Actor who plays Ron (forgot the name)- He has starred in 'Thunderpants' and had some small tv roles, however if you watch 'Thunderpants' and then watch 'Harry Potter' you'll see that he dosent change his character much *TuT*TuT*

Gentleman who plays Dumbledore in 2nd movie- This is none other than Gnadalf from lord of the rings!

Daniel Rnadcliffe, Emma Watson- I havent seen them in anything, maybe there secretly dating?!?

So there you go, by the way I'm sorry i got all proffesional with the actors but I'm off to college in September to do my A-levels which include drama, media and English so I have to be very critical towards all performances :)

Best wishes with school in September! The only actor I had a question about was Dumbledore...in movies one and two, he's played by the late Richard Harris, but I'm *pretty* sure Gandalf (of LOTR fame) is played by Ian McKellen, not Richard Harris. :) I'm pretty positive on that, but then again, I could be wrong...my boyfriend is a HUGE fan of LOTR (the books, especially, but also the movies), so I remember the movies quite well having seen them with him. :D Ron is played be Rupert Grint, and you mentioned some things that these actors have been in that I didn't know about and I found rather interesting! Who did Mark Williams play in the Harry Potter movies by the way? :???:
