Members names and Houses

Postby Paul » Wednesday 11 December 2002 7:00:36pm

Just wondering what peoples views are - up till now I've sorted members into the house they request even if their screenname is the name of a Harry potter character who is in a diierent house. Do you think I should continue to sort members into certain houses even if their HP character is actual in a different house, or should those with HP character names go into the appropriate house?

Well, as this isn't a role-playing board, I see no problem whatsoever in sticking people in the houses they'd like to be in, regardless of screenname.

'Course, I'm someone who's asking to be put into a house that his namesake didn't belong to, so perhaps I'm a bit biased. ;)

I don't see any problem here either, as Lupin has said, it is not a RPG, so we shouldn't expect people with certain screen names to behave as HP characters.

100% for "members should be allowed to be sorted wherever they prefer" so far. I thought I'd better check this with everyone in case I was annoying anyone by putting folks in different Houses. I'll leave the poll until Saturday to "brew" and then get the sortings recommenced. :)

I agree. It's not like this is an RPG, and if someone wants to be sorted into a certain house, they should be able to.

Wow, a total agreement here - still 100% for freedom of preference. Thanks for the votes and the advice.. I think it adds a bit of uniqueness this way too...so let the sorting recommence! I'm off to the Sorting Hat thread straight away :)

i also agree with this scheme. I think it keeps the freedom about the board, and also most people with names like 'Harry Potter' Go in their correct house...

Well, that means that I can't be in Ravenclaw, cuz my username is Hermione ;)

No, I don't think we should do it based on member names. I mean, most of the names have different meanings or origins. Here are a few examples:

1) Hermione- also Helen of Troy's daughter

2) Lupin- stems from the Latin word meaning wolf or wolf-like (I forget what it is exactly). There's also a word in English: Lupine.

3) I think Nicholas Flamel also really existed. I believe he was an alchemist in France.

i bet that flamel was no coincidence (i know i can't spell), if you asked a wizard in the book, they would probably tell you that flamel is/was a great sorcerer living under the guise of a muggle in france

Nicolas flammel was an alchemist who lived in france during the 1400s and was obsessed about mercury

I voted number to! cuz if some one likes the name Draco (eg.) and they really wanted to be in Gryffindor, it wouldn't be fair to put em in a house they din't want to go in!
